Personally, I would jump on an XXL 540 if I wanted one, or the newer models were too pricey for my budget.

The big difference is the screen is not as good as many of the newest models, but it's still a good screen, and it's a great device overall. My very similar, but smaller XL 340's have very few glitches during operation these days (unlike when I first got my first one). They are worth every penny of their current market price in my opinion, and there's certainly no shame in buying an XXL 540.

I have had an XXL 540 TM for about two months, and yes I bought it on close out, but it works great, and I feel lucky to have gotten it. The screen response could be better, but it has all the features I wanted and some I didn't realize I needed.

I just bought an XXL 550 and it does not have the Itinerary features !!

Does the XXL 540 S have the Itinerary features?

More info: My intention is to use Tyre to transfer Google Maps routes to the TomTom. I got the XXL 550 home and was able to transfer the routes to it. Then discovered it does not have the menu choices to access the route/Itinerary that were loaded. Sigh...

Does the XXL 540 series have this Itinerary ability blocked out as well?.

I believe the all the 540's have the Itinerary freature. I don't think the Easy Menu like the 550 do. The 540S is the most basic model and would not have the Life Time Maps nor the Life Time Traffic updates.  T = Traffic; M = Maps; TM = both. The best way to check for Itinerary is to look at the on-line manual for your model. If there are not instructions for it you do not have it.

An interesting thing about the manual is that the XXL 550/540 manual has the Itinerary section. But the XXL 550 does not have the Itinerary feature available. So I was not sure about the XXL 540

Actually the XXL530/540 share a manual, the 550's is separate.

I purchased an XXL 540TM at an attractive price and it came with a promotion code for Lifetime Map updates.   The unit works fine and I am familiar with Tom Tom as I have another unit I have had for about 5 years.  I wanted a bigger screen and the newer features.    The problem I have is I can download and install Tom Tom Home on a separate e-mail address from the older Tom Tom Home for the older unit but I cannot access it.  I run into Error Message 1058 and cannot get to Tom Tom Home 2 to activate my Lifetime Map subscription or use any of the other features contained in Tom Tom Home.  I have sought technical help from Tom Tom.com but, so far, have had no success solving this problem or gaining access to Tom Tom Home 2.  Can anyone out there help me?

Try for the TM. That has both traffic and map lifetime updates. If you have to deal with traffic, you will want that.

Do you have two versions of TTHome on your computer now. You may have to remove the older version.

There is an old Tom Tom Home but I cannot figure out how to uninstall it.   It does not show up in the Programs and Features section of the Control Panel and I can find no uninstall option anywhere for it.

You can use Windows Explorer (not the browser), go to Program files, then TomTom. If you click on that you will see an uninstall file. Run that and it should go away.

Download the freeware version of Revo Uninstaller from here:

    http://download.cnet.com/Revo-Uninstaller/3000-2096_4-10687648.html

    Completely uninstall Home 2.

Then, get a new copy at tomtom.com/home

dhn   -  I really do appreciate your attempts to help.....I did exactly what you suggested, downloaded and installed the REVO uninstaller.    Figured out how to use it and uninstalled Tom Tom Home 2 as well as a whole variety of scraps and pieces of older Tom Tom Home and everything related to it.  I was very hopeful it was going to work finally.    Went to Tom Tom Home. Com and downloaded  Tom Tom Home 2.  It downloaded and installed (verified in program lists under Tom Tom and in Control Panel under Programs and Features).  However, when I attempted to start Tom Tom Home 2, I got precisely the same error message 1058 and could not access Tom Tom Home.    I have been waiting for several days to hear from the Tom Tom Support people but no response to may additional questions.   Two tech people were unsuccessful in solving the problem.   Several Forum suggestions were tried but none worked.

I am growing more and more suspicious that the discontinued XXL 540 model must have a variety of flaws but I do not understand my inability to access Tom Tom Home from my computer.

I do not know if you have any further suggestions to try or any other advice but I am still at square one where I started with this problem shortly after receiving the new XXL 540 and attempting to use Tom Tom Home to activate my Lifetime Map Subscription and all of the other features I have learned to use at Tom Tom Home.

Perhaps there is a "fixable" flaw in the downloadable and installable Tom Tom Home 2 that could be addressed and repaired by the Tom Tom Tech people?

Again, thanks for trying to help me....but I still need HELP!

I could not find this error on TomTom so I did an internet search and found this site along with many others. It is a Microsoft Windows error and here is a fix. Apparently,  it is "caused by missing system files or broken system registry structures. This is a critical sign of an unstable system that is typically caused by improper maintenance of the computer." Tsk tsk.

I  have never tried it, but it does appear to be endorsed by Microsoft:

    Hope this does the job.

    Sailor 225:

I appreciate your attempts to help with the problem.   I did what you suggested but it is only a free download...there is a charge for the FIX....an annual cost of about $40 before you can get to any fix.    There is no specific instructions for dealing with error 1058 but I scanned, cleaned and did all that was suggested hoping that somehow the problem would be fixed.   Unfortunately, when I got to the end of the line and attempted to open Tom Tom Home 2, the result was exactly the same as the first time I tried,  error message 1058 which said Tom Tom Home was either disabled or there was no machine enabled so Tom Tom Home could not be started.

The two Tom Tom Techs who tried to help seemed to acknowledge that they had a number of Error 1058 message reports and went through a variety of things to try with no success either.   They have been unresponsive to follow-up questions.

The Forum suggestions are all I have been able to get but nothing there has worked either.  I have uninstalled, re-installed a number of times....have re-booted a number of times.....have done everything suggested in every way I could try and the rsult is always the same.....I think I have gotten rid of all vestiges of any old Tom Tom Home or updates I had before.  I have no trouble downloading or installing Tom Tom Home 2 or uninstalling it to try again but the error message simply prevents me accessing Tom Tom Home..

I still believe Tom Tom programmers should be able to write a clause that would allow bypassing that message somehow although I am not a programmer.

I can use the Tom Tom XXL 540 unit but don't know how I will ever keep maps updated or take advantage of the Lifetime Map Service I thought I was getting.    I hate to abandon Tom Tom but have grown very disgusted with this mess and the fact that Tom Tom Support does not seem to want to deal with my problem anymore.

Thankis, again, for trying to help me.   I do not know what more I can try.    Certainly not going to scrap my computer or get into this whole mess again on a different computer.

I hate to have to shift to some other GPS since I am so familiar and happy with Tom Tom.

Sorry, I should have known it was one of those scan free pay to fix offers. I would have one more suggestion that is truly free, and I have used it for years, and that is CCleaner by Piriform. You can download it from www.download.cnet.com/ccleaner. It has a registry cleaner that helped me to get rid of a piece of printer file that was preventing me from reinstalling the printer. It also does a good job of cleaning up junk files and can also be used as an uninstaller. To be on the safe side, run the register scan  and look only for files that it finds that could be related to TomTom Home. The files that it finds are no longer in use or have some error with them. It will find registry files from programs you have removed long ago. Usually you are OK to correct anything that it finds wrong with the registry files, but for now I would try correct only TomTomHome files. It does offer you a chance to create a backup before you make the changes. Hope this gets you back on the road with your 540. One other possibility for you is to go to a library and install TomTomHome on their computer and try your update there. Others have done this (on this forum), and any installed software is deleted at the end of the day, so the libraries allow this.

225 sailor......You are forgiven.....It turns out your advice really helped me and made the Pareto subscription worthwhile!  I wanted to share what happened and the resolution with you since you have tried so hard to help and since you might be able to use this information in the future.

I decided to contact their Tech support to pursue their claim to be able to resolve Error 1058 issues.    I got into an immediate Chat with a very skilled Tech who solved my problem immediately.

It turns out to be a compatibility issue between operating systems.   When I first installed Tom Tom Home several years ago I was using Windows XP which had been updated by Service Pack 2.   After that, I went to Vista and then finally to my current operating system, Windows 7.   Even though I thought I had completely uninstalled any vestiges of the old Tom Tom Home, there were compatibility problems.

The resoltuion was simple.   I went to the Tom Tom program and right-clicked then clicked on Properties.   Then go to the Compatibility tab.   Here you must select Run Compatible with  XP SP2.  Click apply and OK.    it is as simple as that!

Tom Tom Home now works flawlessly, I can access it and did so.   Activated my Lifetime Map Subscription and then downloaded and installed the latest maps from the US, Canada and Mexico.

Needless to say, I was greatly relieved and happy with all this!    And, I doubt that I would have gotten to the solution without your help!    I am a bit surprised that the Tom Tom Techs did not know about this.   Perhaps you will have a way to communicate with them or I may have a chance to pass this info on to them at some point.

Maybe someone reading this will find it useful and/or will pass it on to other Techs.

Thanks, again!   I really appreciate your assistance!

Well thanks! It is a learning process, and many heads are better than one etc etc. I think you should start a new thread with "resolving Error 1058 issues" in the title, and your solution. I think that is the best way for this issue to get noticed and will help a lot of people.
