Gentlemen,

I own a TomTom XL and now the unit or the program reports that it can not update the unit since it is out of memory, or at least almost out of memory. The suggestion is that I shall change to a 2Gb SD card. Fine, but where is the needed card slot anywhere, can´t find it. My unit does not have any visual slots and the users guide does not say anything either.

Best regards,

Peter

You can't replace the internal memory. You will need to use the map zones and take a laptop with you :( Prepare both zones at home, make a manual backup of each, and then you just need to remove and move the maps you need.

Its a strange one The user guide i downloaded for your device does mention a SD card but doesnt offer a diagram to show you where.

is your device in this list http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2634/kw/SD%20CARD

My device is in the list, as XL 30. The table says 1Gb/2Gb and also that the device does not have a memory slot. So how do I change memory size. Or am I cursed to use maps in smaller segments, zones. Which is the solution I have presently. This means that going on a grand tour with my car from Sweden to Italy requires me to change maps before entering Italy since the northern zone only covers Sweden, Germany and Austria.

As this thread went on I got a feeling that your solution will be the out come of this. Not to satisfying actually but the XL 30 is possibly not designed for use over whole continents, more a one country/state solution and a fairly good one as such.

Best regards and thank you all,

I have one of these XL 30's and just purchased the newest US/Canada maps.  Now I am stuck as the file doesn't fit, I have no card slot to provide space and the maps appear to have no zone options.

Looks like I need to ask for a refund.  I have contacted support to see if there's some option I missed.  Perhaps they have a link to download US/Canada zones that I can't find.

This is very sad.  I never would have made the purchase if I knew there was no work around.

It supposed to offer you the zone options. When you try to download it, it should tell you that it won't fit, and a few steps later it would give the zone option.

Sorry, no, it did not offer me the zones.  I see the new maps in TomTom Home and when I try to install it says that the memory card in my navigation device is not large enough to install and to install a larger card.  Of course there is no slot for this; so I look for plan B.

Plan B involves using map zone support section to which there is a link provided.  I click on that link and go to this page http://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/maps/map-zones/ which tells all about map zones, but fails to provide a link to mine.

I have put in a support email and received the first answer to my question.  They sent me a canned reply of instructions for reformating the TomTom drive in order to stop it from "looping".  Well, my question was specific... tell me how to put in a larger memory card, or provide the link for downloading the map zones.  If they cannot provide what I need, they need to refund my money because I cannot use these maps.

I replied again to please address my specific quesitons and repeated my questions.  Now I continue to wait.

Odd. It used to offer the zones in step 2 or 3 a the download stage. It used to say like twice it is not big enough, then offered the zone. Maybe something changed at TT's end.

Thanks for all the good info in this forum.  I just returned from a short trip and my TomTom is working fine now.

Support set me on the right track by telling me (after I had to ask them 4 times) to delete the POI's and voices and then there was room to install the map.  But then the unit would not work unplugged from the compupter.

I had to use TomTom Home to delete all the files from my computer and all the files from the TomTom.  Then I reformatted the TomTom disk.  Then used TomTom Home to update and got a new TomTom application file followed by all the rest of the files downloaded again.  I don't know if I'll be able to put back the POI's or even safety cameras notice app again.  At least  I have a working unit with updated maps.

Updating computer things can be a hairy deal.  Updating a TomTom is not like taking a pill and done.  I'm not a computer newbie, but it took me a couple of days and quite a bit of fooling with it.  I wish you all well with yours.  What you need to know is all here in the forums... keep reading and working on it... you'll get there too.

Should be on the back, around the USB plug or a slot on the back, visible from above.

    Hi

I have thesame problem.I only have 1.68  Gb available & the western Europe map is 1.79 Gb. So I have removed all the speech folders except English, which total 274 Mb, This reduces the Westwern Europe Maps to 1.54 Gb so now it will fit. I am uploading to the XL which takes about an hour, so I can't yet tell you if it works, but it should work.

Press continue and ignore the page that says buy a memory card - it will allow you to get rid of your current maps and then insert the new one  Takes a long time.

Memory card slots are barely under stickers. Under the sticker there might be a SIM slot. On some devices there are plastic flaps and those can "hide" the memory card slot, otherwise it is on the bottom, next to the USB or on the back of the device, visible from above.

I just downloaded the latest map updates to my pc.  When I inserted my old XL, I was told I need 4G memory.  If I don't have a slot for a memory card, how do I get my updates?  Is my money wasted or can I get a refund if I can't use the newest updates?

Without a slot, you may need to rely only on zoned maps.

Did you ever get an answer to your question about a larger memory card that you sent in 2012?  I now have the same problem and the page to the zone map could not be reached.

Does anyone have any thoughts about doing this?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=banx1zvJrZk

Presuming this works you would not even need an SD card socket if a Micro SD card can fit inside the case. Just solder the jumper wires directly to the card. If you've already figured you have to buy a new GPS then you don't have much to lose. I've seem 4GB micro SD cards for $4.

If I knew this would work I'd try it.

I came across another picture showing what looks like the same pinout connections. Also saw a youtube on replacing the battery in an XXL. I don't know the difference between the XL & XXL but the case disassembly is a bit different.
