Go to this path in your computer

C:Documents and SettingsYour_User_NameMy DocumentsTomTomHOMEBackupONE XLBackup01InternalMemory

Look for a folder called USA_Canada_and_Mexico_P

Copy this folder and paste it into you gps memory

Have you tried to uninstall and reinstall the application software in the gps...here is a link to the procedure.

    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2053/kw/uninstall

Please note that sometimes you may have to go thru the update process more then once, It seems that the server may installs an older version the first time, a not so old the next time, and then the up to date version the third time. Tomtom has not provide a resonable explaination for this only that it does happens.....The older versions may not be compatible with your unit and it will act strange....just plug the gps back in the computer and due a hard reset

    to start the next update.

Did the lockup problem begin before performing any update?

The backup you made was it before updating.?

Have you tried to operate you gps via Home using the "operate my device"?

Sorry for the questions --- just getting a little history.

If you have a backup copy made before the lockup problem started. Then I would consider formatting the memory on the gps and restoring the memory.

In your first post you mentioned you had a backup...What did you use to make it?

You may have a copy in Home that you should also check

Go to "Add Traffic, Voices, etc" then hit the right arrow icon until you come to "Items on my computer" and open this.

If you have installed any maps on you gps before they will show up here. And you can add them back using the "ADD" button.

Ok, so let me get clear on this. The first time you updated your gps did you make a backup first and where you successful?

Also have you ever downloaded a map or update a map in the past?

I am so glad you got it working again....

Now to make things easier next time make a backup usiing windows explorer. Here is a link that provides the steps for doing that and restoring your gps if it becomes necessary...

I have tried everything that is previously mentioned! I have a back up on my account. I have tried reformatting! Nothing works to get my Tomtom Xl to connect to my computer! It occasionally flashes red X, then goes the screen about the same screen without the red X. What else can I try or do to fix my tomtom?

    First some information.

    1. What model do you have? What are the first two letters of the serial number?

    2. Did you make a manual backup using windows explorer?

    3. You mentioned you backed up to your account, does that mean you used TomTom Home software to create a backup?

4.If you connect the gps to your computer can you access the gps's memory via Window's Explorer, it should appear as a

       mass storage device?

I have an XL model. I do use Totom Home and that is where I backed it up. I used Windows Xp to back it up. Yes it shows up as a mass storage device. But formating doesn't work and I have tried all suggestions on the forum or search. Nothing has rebooted or reformatted my tomtom.

Not being able to format the flash memory in the gps is not good news. Usually means there is a hardware failure. As a last ditch effort, I would see if a low level format (LLF) will work. Sometimes is does and sometimes is doesn't.

Here is a link to a free utility for performing a LLF.

    http://hddguru.com/software/HDD-LLF-Low-Level-Format-Tool/

Depending on the problem you have the LLF can take a while to finish. Allow the utility to run until it is successful or gives up. If successful you will still need to perform a windows FAT32 format on the memory.

Note: If the LLF is successful it will tell you to partition the drive. Just ignore this message and perform a windows format.

    Hi Folks,

I have a TomTom XL which has become locked up.  Accepts software updates but when I switch the TomTom device back, all systems are locked.

If anybody can give some advice, this would be much appreciated.

    Regards

    AH

Try a drum reset on the unit by holding the power button about 20 seconds till you hear the drum sounds
