Hello

I have an XL340.TM. I was well into a first time FREE Lifetime map download using the promotion code but had to abort the process. My own error. When I tried to restart the down load the system tells me I can't use the promotion code more than once? What? But I haven't used it yet, I aborted the download process! Confused.  If you only get one shot, how can that be a lifetime supply? Can anyone tell me how to get my FREE map upgrades now that I have apparently unsuccessfully used my one shot at this promotion?

Thanks

ruko

You should not have to use the code again; in fact, you can't. Once you enter it, it is entered. Your problem is to recover from your aborted download. If you actually hit "abort" you are probably OK. Hopefully you did not just unplug it. You do have to log in to TomTom Home with your email address and password that you set up during registration, or you will not see any updates. Try this, if it still doesn't work,  just call the number dhn gave you.

When I bought my XL 350 one of the things that caught my eye was "free life time map updates".

Now, every time I connect to my computer, I get software updates but am asked to pay for map updates.

I thought they were supposed to be FREE.

    Hi there,

are you logged in with the TT Home application and your e-mail-address is shown in the top right corner? If not do so.

Also please tell us which map version do you have installed on your device? The latest map version is still v875 but this month there should be another version published which will be v880.

The free map update promo code will only work for the US, Canada & Mexico map (may also be called North America map). So for all other maps you'll need a separate map update subscription if you'd like to update those maps as well.

    Regards

    Lars.

I cannot get my lifetime maps either.  I spoke to customer service and I am being told that they don't see that I have lifetime maps.  The only reason I bought it was for the free lifetime maps.  I was told to email them with my receipt or a picture of the box where it says about the maps!  They cannot go by the serial number.  I cannot believe the run around.  I am so displeased with the whole TomTom experience.

The other thing is that I had a TomTom and then purchased the new one for the maps.  I went to my account online to register the new TomTom and update it.  The old TomTom info is on the new TomTom now!  Customer Service told me I bought a map for the new TomTom.  I said I bought it for the old TomTom.  Nothing popped up or alerted me that you can only have one device on the account.  Customer Service had me make a new account now but it certainly did not change all the mess has been created and I STILL DONT HAVE MY LIFETIME MAPS!

You are able to scan a copy of the receipt or the box and send to TomTom Support by email from within the TomTom account. Did you send them a copy? Otherwise they aren't able to activate the lifetime maps onto the account.

In case there's a activation code, then you can also give TomTom Support the code so they can manually activate the service onto your account.

    Flowergarden,

You should reregister your new TomTom with a different email address; that might solve the problem, although you would have thought the serial number for the new one should have worked. Which model do you have? If you get free updates you should have a model number with an M included such as XXL540M.

    Hi,

you may find out your device's exact name by using the link below:

Which TomTom device do I have? (hyperlink)

Below I'll explain the meaning of the description:

    • XXL540M:         you'll have a XXL540 with lifetime map updates for the North American map.
    • XXL540T:          you'll have a XXL540 with lifetime traffic, so you'll have the TMC receiver delivered with your device.
    • XXL540TM:      you'll have a XXL540 with both features already described.
    • XXL540S:         you'll have neither lifetime map updates nor lifetime traffic but only the text-to-speech functionality.

    Regards

    Lars.

I bought three Tom Tom XLs for Christmas last year and never connected online to get the free lifetime map updates that the box claimed you would get, when I finally needed to update the maps I found out that you have to pay for updates, when I called Tom Tom to see what I needed to do to get the free lifetime map updates that were advertised by them, Silvia At Tom Tom said I needed the box which I'm sure I dont have anymore, (BAD ADVERTISEMENT ON THE BOX)  it should have been clearer, don't promise free lifetime map updates if you need a special box code to get the update, it should be on the device itself, My Garmin device has a much beeter map and it worked right out the box, it finds streets that none of the Tom Toms can find, I will never by a Tom Tom again, very unhappy

Well you don't need to keep the box, just the activation code that was on a card marked in large red letters "IMPORTANT - DO NOT DISCARD YOU WILL NEED THIS VOUCHER CODE IN ORDER TO ENABLE YOUR LIFETIME MAPS SUBSCRIPTION"  It was laying on top of the gps's when you opened  each of the three boxes.... You have to phyically pick it up to get to the gps. However Tomtom is willing to activate the subscription if you can prove that you actually got a model with lifetime maps (ie you have the box ). Vendors have been known to advertise lifetime maps but ship units that don't come with it.

Unfortunitely, I missed the label you are talking about and didnt read the manual deep enough to catch the fact that you had to activate the advertised free map update by typing in some promotional code, I just thought it would automatically come with the unit that was in the advertised box, I bought the units from Traget.  The map that is in the unit cannot find many street addresses which is frustrating, I got it last Christmas and I have an older Garmin that finds the addresses everytime, so Tom Tom must have put a pretty old map in the units I bought.  if I am lucky I will be able to find the all important boxes/label in my garage if they didnt get thrown out.

You can report map errors via TomTom's mapshare web site at:

    http://www.tomtom.com/mapshare/tools/

They should show up eventually via a mapshare update.

I talked to someone in support.  They told me that I have to have a separate email account for each device I have.  Our newer one took on our old device's info.  Then they said I had to email support to make a complaint since I am unhappy about paying for lifetime maps, not being able to get them, and for not being told that if I didn't use another email account everything would get messed up.  They emailed to send a copy of my receipt and serial number but then they didn't like the format I used to send the copy.  They wanted it in a different format.  I did that but never heard back from them.  I just emailed them again for a second attempt.

Rivieracoleman; you must have a model that offers that, such as mine, which is a XXL540 TM. The "M" in the model number means you get lifetime map upgrades. That is the only way to get free lifetime map upgrades (not totally free since you probably pay a little more for those models).

I have to XL540M but do not have the promotion code, box the unit came in, or the receipt any more since it was purchased a year ago.  When I spoke with Tom Tom they said the only way I can get the free map update offer is if I had one of the above.  They said they sold some of these modeled units without the free map update offer so you """Cannot"""" Go by the model number.  Basically I am just going to have to replace this unit with a Garmin since their maps find more streets then my Tom Tom does.  I am not going to purchase a map from Tom Tom since I was supposed to get them free but unfortunately I did not look closer at the paperwork that came with the unit to notice the requirement to enter a promotion code .

Yep, this is a lesson learned and I hope this thread helps Other Purchasers to be aware they need to enter their promotion codes early when they buy a Tom Tom with free lifetime map updates so they do not fall into the same loss of advertised free lifetime map updates if they miss reading all the papers on the inside of the box, thanks

Oh really.   I did not read everything on the box when I threw it away.  One would expect that the serial number would give Tom Tom the info they need to upgrade my maps.  I am now royally annoyed.  I've been using my Tom Tom for maybe two years, no complaints...but noticed a few times the map was not current, so thought I'd sit down the update (for FREE I thought).

I've been trying to find a "contact us" phone number, no luck with that.

But from what I am reading I am out of luck.

Rather than update, I'd rather pay more and purchase a new one...NOT Tom Tom.    And, I was just about to BUY Europe maps....forget it.  I don't like the way they operate.   I did not read all of the material, because my prior gps was also a Tom Tom (which fell off the windscreen....often....and one time it broke the glass and they don't fix the glass).  But I bought another Tom Tom and stick it to the dash (and it falls off that too!!!!).  But I already knew how to operate this new Tom Tom, so I tossed the box.

Forget Tom Tom.  I think I'll be checking out Garmin's.  What a disappointment.   I'll try first to see if there is a contact us that  I've missed...but if I don't find it soon I'm giving up on this company.  They lost my European map sale...and any future sales.

I am actually leaving in about an hour to shop for me new NON-Tom-Tom GPS.   It should be in bold neon letters on the box..."must activate code within ? days after purchase to be able to receive the lifetime updates".   I'm annoyed because there was a cheaper option when I bought this one....but I wanted the maps.  I feel ripped off.   Anything that important should be displayed in such a way that it cannot be missed by the consumer.

I was a first time GPS buyer just a year ago, and had no problems getting my lifetime maps etc. I read the card that was enclosed with the bold red letters IMPORTANT - DO NOT DISCARD You will need this voucher code in order to enable your Lifetime Maps subscription. I still have the card.

I don't think you can blame TomTom for your oversite.
