Ok so I was charging and updating the day before I used it. Appeared everything went well until i turned it on the next day. Thats when it started flashing the red x...Puzzled...Im not too advanced with this thing and obviously only update it when prompted to do so...Any ideas how I can fix this?

If you hold the power button down beyond the drum beat you call up the diagnostic screen.....  to reset the device you need to release the button the moment you first hear the drum beat.

Sure if the unit is still under warranty and you still have the purchase receipt to show when it was bought.  But what have you tried to get the unit working again?  Short of an actual hardware failure most problems can be resolved.

    1. Save everything from the device, using Explorer (or Finder on Mac), include all the files (hidden as well). It is also known as a manual backup: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13354/

    2. Then format the internal storage (or memory card, depending which one you use) of your device. Use the COMPLETE format, not the quick. http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12412/

    3. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again. At this point you might have to disconnect the device a few times and switch it ON/OFF to enable it to setup some important stuff.

    4. Copy your voices and post codes back to the device (also the maps if that didn't download either).

    Other tips:

    - Try to disable your antivirus and firewall
    - Make sure you have the latest .NET cpmponents, Adobe Flash Player and Java installed.
    - Make sure you have all the latest updates and hotfixes/patches to your OS.
    - In case the device looks like hung during the update or the counter stopped, just leave it. It will be fine in a few minutes.
    - Try to uninstall and re-install the TomTom HOME application
    - Try to use a USB port on the mainboard, rather than a USB hub (desktop PC)

    - Any further issue: Try it on another PC, try it with different USB lead...the shorter the better (below steps are Windows specific)
    - Remove the TomTom HOME application and run CCLEANER (will remove your history, cookies, etc by default)

Yeah, I had this problem. Searched these message boards, emailed customer service, called customer service for over a year. I never got a fix for this.

    Hello people!

I got a TomTom XL350 and suddenly prompts the flashing red X... I tryied everything, resetting in anyways and it still not work. but, there´s something interesting: When I connect to the PC, the PC recognizes it as a TomTom XL ONE. not the 350.  a new removable drive appears in my computer icon but can´t access it (like a SD card reader without SD card) Of course the tomotom home software doesn't recognize the device.

I tryied in 3 different computers, all the same. When I turn the GPS on, I got the red X; when I connect it to the PC, it displays the GPS with the cable. when I keep the on/off button pressed, I can hear the drums, but same response.

Any ideas What could be wrong? Appreciate any comments

I appreciate your quick response Zsolt, and before asking, I was reading all the posts and there are some things I can´t do:

I can´t access the device, in the PC, it only appears like a removable drive without space. I mean, like if you connect a SD card reader witrhout the SD card. If I view the properties in the menu of this removable drive, it appears as 0KB size.

I can´t make a backup or delete/copy files since I can´t see the device in the tomtom home software.

I´m using the original USB Cable, and I also got another original USB cable and it is connected to the back USB port of the PC. (also tryied in a laptop and another desktop PC) without USB Hubs or extensions.

I´m USing Windows XP SP 3 and the latest version of TTHome

What I found suspicious is when I connect the device to the PC, it appears as installing a new device, but a TOMTOM XL ONE device, and not the TOMTOM XL350 that I have. I found in a post that the XLOne have an SD Slot, and the XL350 doesn´t have one. but I don´t get another drive letter to explore the internal memory.

    thanks

That doesn't sound wicked. Wondering if the storage is faulty then. I assume you have no warranty on the unit, have you?

for what it is worth - after spending hours of grooming through these forum, attempting to contact TomTom support, nothing is working. Originally I just wanted to update my GPS, it was working fine, after hours of aggravation I'm resorting to a disgruntled posting. Spare you the details, I have tried everything in this blog. I'm now taking a hammer to the device and purchasing a Garmin. If you have stumbled on this blog because because of the above mentioned issue, save yourself the aggravation and find joy in physically destroying your tomtom, lessons learned; never buy another TomTom!

Would have been better to sell it on eBay or so and use that money towards whatever you wanted to buy...

My tom tom start was switched on and I had the flashing white x in a red circle with a blue circle on the bottom left corner with what looks like a key in it.I have reset it,and now it has the following display
TomTom START (TM) (c) TomTom 2003-2010 Build -N/A-

    Hardware type: TomTom START

    SubID (feature) 00 (0000000000000000)

    Memory:32 MB. Type:MDDR

    CPU ID: 32450003

    Clocks: 264.0 132.0 66.0

    GPS type: GL2 BCM4750 FFFF

    TFT Type: AUO A035QN02 ALT13

    Internal FLASH capacity: 2007040 KB

MMC NAND version (PRV): 36 48.0 MHz 4 B SAMSUNG

    Sector protection: YES

    Battery boot voltage: 3756 mV0x03780x0307

    RTC: 04:39:12 01.01.2000

I tried to follow the TOM TOM instructions to reboot the device and all was going well until they asked for the code.I assume this was on the box I'd thrown away.
    Any suggestions please.
    Thanks

I wish you luck, as I stated there wasnt anything in this forum that worked for me. I can assure you I have exhausted the resources, and it was nothing but a huge time sink! Trying to update my TomTom only permanently locked me out of an otherwise perfectly functioning GPS.

I purchased a Garmen with a life time map update package and Im very happy with it. The sales person at Office Max where I purchased it was familiar with these issues you are expressing with TomTom.

Been there done that... nothing worked for me...would be great if TOMTOM actually supported these units, at least provided some type of insentave to purchase another.... I junked the TomTom and bought a Garmen.

I have been trying to solve the flying red cross on sd card error on my go520 for a week now,no joy but am reluctant to take a hammer to it although thats probably the best bet.

Like in a previous post the computer shows (2 new drive letters?) D and E when connected but Home says no device connected.....It shows 'tomtom go' in device manager under disk drivesbut neither has anything in the volume etc.(This is with the dummy sd card in the gps).

It does have an sd card slot which I can boot from after installing a new os on it but I do not have a map to put on the sd card. I would really like a solution to this if anyone has any ideas, thanks ps the map was on the gps hardrive which I cannot access and I have no back-up.

Was the map the original that came with the 520 or an update? If the latter, you may be able to install it manually. See here:

Thanks for that but I have no map backup on the computer and because the 520 will not connect I cannot make a copy

of the internal contents. My only option is to run the gps from the SD card but I do not have a map.Do you think Tomtom would provide me with a replacement map?If I have to purchase one I may as well buy another sat nav.

Also if I download a map from the internet would my original activation code work?

    Thanks

From several years of experience and several tries with 4 TomTom units, Tomtom does not care. The only time you will have issues with the unit is when you go to update the map. Never update & never plug in and all will be well.
