Ok so I was charging and updating the day before I used it. Appeared everything went well until i turned it on the next day. Thats when it started flashing the red x...Puzzled...Im not too advanced with this thing and obviously only update it when prompted to do so...Any ideas how I can fix this?

Usually a sign that the TomTom cannot find an application installed.

1. Make an Explorer, not Home, backup of your unit's contents. If not sure how, see HERE

2. Delete all the loose files in the root of the unit. Do NOT delete any folders or their contents.

3. Connect to Home and install the application that will be offered.

4. Disconnect the unit PROPERLY from Home using the Device Disconnect icon.

Any better?

Try resetting the unit by holding the power button 15 seconds or so till you hear the drum roll.

Mine shows the SD card whizzing out into the screen then flashing a red cross.

I've tried formatting the card and restoring files (Took B**Y ages!)

I've tried a unit rest by pressing the little indented button

I tried another 8GB card but when I try to restore it says put card in Tom Tom 300...
    IT ALREADY IS!

    Now...

I am ready to throw it through the window...

    HEEEEEELP!! please.

    Hi TVRRacer,

Sorry to hear of the issues you're having with your TomTom.

I think I can see what the issue is here - you may be using a memory card the TomTom cannot read. The maximum size our TomTom units can read is 4GB - and even then it is device specific.

Can you please let me know what unit you have so I can tell you specifically the maximum size card you should be using? Otherwise, we have information on this on our website, I've included the link below for you:

    http://www.tomtom.com/2634

Hopefully this information helps you with resolving the red cross.

    KInd regards;

    Zoe

    Zoe, your information is incorrect.

All Go models with the latest application can read/write to sdhc cards up to 32 gigs in size.

    Hi dhn,

Just to prevent confusion, our website confirms that SD cards are approved up to 4GB for certain devices.

Some TomTom Go devices may well work with larger memory cards, but we cannot confirm this as we have not tested them with the bigger memory cards.

Therefore, if you're using an 8 GB card and getting a red cross for instance, the first point of troubleshooting would be to try an approved size memory card.

Hope this clears things up! :D

Buy any chance did you make a backup copy of the memory in the past?

To connect to the computer, first turn the gps off, connect it to the computer and turn it on. If the gps still does not connect to the computer press the power button until it resets while connected to the computer....it should connect then.

Ok try this, pull the diagnostic screen up on your unit. Press and hold the power button for about 5 sec or so after you hear the drum beat. You should get a screen that shows data like this.

TomTom ONE (TM) (c) TomTom 2003-2010 Build -N/A-

Hardware type: TomTom XXL IQ Routes Edition

    SubID (feature) 0 1: 0001 (0000000500000000)

    Bootloader version: S5.5279 clist#575098 RVCT

    Checksum: E56D

    Memory: 64 MB. Type:MSDR

    CPU ID: 32412003

    Clocks: 264.0 132.0 66.0

    GPS type: GL2 BCM4750 FFFF

    TFT Type: SAMSUNG LMS500HF05 30

    Internal FLASH capacity: 2007040 KB

MMC NAND version (PRV): 36 Samsung

    Startup mode: Power down

    Device ID: (shows serial number)

    Touchscreen calib. data: 72 945 119 883 @3300mV

    Sector protection: No

    Battery boot voltage: 4039 mV

RTC: (shows current time and date)

look for the Internal Flash Capacity the amount will vary based on the amount of memory you have.

If you don't see this entry it will mean the flash memory controller is dead.

    Let me know.

What model gps and first two letters in the serial number.do you have?

    Is it a GO

I was thinking that some of the models of GO did not have any internal

memory storage and came with a factory memory card with the map

    and application on it.

Anyways Insert a SD card formatted and perform the same diagnostic test.

What is the size of the card and what is the gps reporting it is.

Also see of you computer will attach with the SD card installed.

Model is Go 530 and the first 2 digits are J1.  There is a slot for the SD card but I have never had to use one.  The maps came pre-installed on the device drive

Humm --- I just checked  the specs on your unit baseed on the two characters of you serial number .... It shows that your unit came with 1Gb SD card .... and the Go530 has no internal memory except 64mb of ram and 4mb of rom.  I checked the user's manual and it states that the application software and maps are stored on the SD card...   Are you 100% sure that it didn't come with a card that at some point pop out and got lost?

In any case there are three steps for getting your unit working. One step if you had made a backup of the memory.

Step 1.   Get a 2 Gb formatted SD card and install it in the gps

Step 2.   Plug gps into pc and install the application and at least one voice on SD card,

Step 3.   Install map on SD card.

I can provide you more detailed instructions if you want. The problem is the map... if you don't have a backup

copy of the memory then you are going to have to purchase a map..... you need to check the cost of that.

You might be better of purchasing a new unit.

You should also call customer service and give them the model and serial number they can confirm  what  I have

found concerning the SD card.... Cause I am pretty sure you don't believe me and that's ok. You should get a

    second opinion.

Well based on the diagnostic screen and the memory card flying out..... it says there is no available memory if there was internal memory it is no longer functioning....

Try placing a blank SD card in and see if your computer can connect then.

A flashing X  means the gps is having a problem with loading the software in it's flash memory. It can usually be resolved by re-install the application software in the gps. Here are the steps for doing this.

First: make a backup of the contents of the gps using windows explorer. Per this link. ( this is to prevent loss of the map data).
    http://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.h...

Second: check the flash memory in the gps to make sure there are no errors.
    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9908/kw/memory%20error

Third: If the memory has no errors or they were repaired by the check disk utility you just ran, uninstall the software on the gps and reinstall it.

    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2053/kw/reinstall

Note: when reinstalling the gps software you may have to perform up to three updates to get everything installed. The  gps may not work correctly until all the updates are installed. Be sure to restart Home and the gps between each update. If the gps won't connect to the computer normally just reset the gps with it connected to the computer. The gps should automatically try to connect to the pc.

Forth: If the gps is working now, there are a few misc files like startup / shutdown screens that you can copy back to the gps from the backup copynyou made. Here is a list of those files. Just use windows explorer to copy them from the main directory of the backup to the main directory in the gps. Do worry if you do not find all these files are not on your backup. Not all gps models have all these files.

     1. antitheftw.bmp   (this may have the named antitheft.bmp)
     2. autorun.inf
     3. splashw.bmp      (this may have the named splash.bmp)
     4. suspendw.bmp     (this may have the named suspend.bmp)
     5. tomtom.ico

If everything is working ok now we recommend making a final backup of your gps. That way if something happens in the future all you have to do is delete everything on the gps and copy the backup to the gps and you are done.

If this has failed to resolve your problem, you might consider reformatting the gps's memory. Here is a link for the procedure.

The problem I have that the Startup mode indicates "Sleep" and even though the device is connected to the computer it indicates that there is no device connected. Does that mean it is a goner and cannot be fixed? Please advise. If it can be  repaired what do I need to do, I already did everything suggested on the website here, so you guys are my last resource before giving up and going back to mapquest.

    Thank you
