My device isn't working and no one has been able to help me, so I'm looking to do a factory reset but the only way I know how to do it is with in the device/application. I was wondering if there was a way to do it in tomtom home on my computer, or even within the various files from the device on my computer. And just so you know I have a mac. I don't know what else to do, so any help would be appreciated.  Thanks.

You can do a factory reset in TomTom HOME probably, if you use the 'Operate my XL' function. Have you tried a normal (hard) reset? You can find the instructions for that here: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/6965.

I have a similar problem, but I cannot reset it either by pressing the ON/OFF button, or by "Operat my XXL" (as that is greyed out!)

What I need is a means to do a hard, new-out-of-the-box reset.

FWIW, press and hold of the ON/OFF button for 25 seconds (to be sure) results in a display of system info (and date set to somewhere in  2000), and then a restart again.

If I connect the device to the PC the icon is TomTom HOM for "Operate my XXL", "Get free map corrections from Map Share(TM)"  and "Back up and restore" buttons are greyed out.

    Help please!

Try again the procedure as described here: http://tomtom.com/6965. Hold the power button until you hear the drums. What is actually your problem with your TomTom? What does not function properly?

You are an angel! I read your post while seraching for a way to fix my problem,. I mistakenly hit the factory reset button and I couldn't even understand the language it was in! I did what you suggested, hit the button for 25 seconds and voila! My Tom Tom is back to normal.  Thank you so very much!

    Dear Megalos,

I cant help but notice your sucess with other peoples systems, and i have tried all of the tips you have given, however i have had no such luck. I have a TomTom Start, i believe it is the first of that range. Everytime i start it up it flashes the red X, i ahve tried countless times now to delete the applications, re update and install the software but this has not worked. i have reset the device multiple times and held down the on/off button for around 30 second. No luck. I am using the HOME software and this will not allow me to use the Operate My Device icon, it says it is not compatible with my device. This device has been passed down from work as they were about to simply throw it out, however i am keen to get it working. I appreciate any advice you have as i have exhausted my own knowledge now, thanks.

    Spencer

Actually, I have another Start that does the exact same. Does your device's serial start with XD? Also when you hold the sw/on button for long, what is the bootloader version on the diagnostic screen?

    Hi,

I had a probem with our Start too.

There is a real, phyysical button on the TomTom, but you have to remove the cover to get at it.

I do not have ine handy at the moment, so this is from memory.  Place the TomTom face down into the palm of your hand.  Then I think you just squeeze the case and it pops off.  here is a hidden reset button that becomes exposed (you need a paperclip for this).  Works OK with ours oh, so long ago 9hence I am working from memory!  :)  If I recall, it was as if it came out of the box from the shop.

    Good luck,

    Escapeman

Bad form to reply to your own message, but I now have the TomTom in my hands.

Place the TotTom Start face down on a table, with the USB connector towards you.  Hold the inside of the TomTom down , and using your fingernail, prise off the cover from the hole where the USB connector is.

The rest hole (needs a paperclip) is to the outside of the TomTom, beside the USB connector.

    Good luck!

    Bertil.
