After updating my tomtom, my screen displays nothing, just a black, blank screen.

Have tried resetting it with the reset button on the bottom but doesn't work.

However, if I leave it a day or so, it'll work perfectly, until I turn it off again and the original problem of nothing being displayed is back again.

Anyone got any ideas?

Thanks

What model do you have. Do you know what was being updated.

If you plug the gps into the computer and reset it.... You get any more updates.

XL IQ routes is actually not the model.... can you provide the first 2 characters of the serial number? We can determine the model from that.

    Hi,

Using your information with the link below I got that you've got a XL IQ Routes ² / XL 250 / XL 350 - 2GB TTS

Which TomTom device do I have? (hyperlink)

Are you able to connect your device to the computer and operate it via TT Home? Please try that and just plan a route in the emulator (operate my device). Afterwards disconnect your device safely using the blue disconnect button in the right bottom corner.

If that doesn't help try reinstalling the application on your device.

    1. Create a backup of your device. How to create a backup of your device (hyperlink)
    2. Open TT Home and go to manage my device -> items on my device -> application -> remove to uninstall the application.
    3. Now to reinstall the application please go to update my device and install the application update that should be offered. Install no other updates.
    4. Now restart your device.
    5. You may have to repeat the last two steps a few times until there are no more application updates pending.
    6. If it was succesful please create another backup of the working unit. You may also install the remaining updates now.

    Regards

    Lars.

The device works with TT Home using the operate my device part.

After removing the application and re-installing it, there is still no change, the screen stays blank.....

    Hi,

it might be a problem with your display after all you described. It could be either the display itself or what's even more probable from my point of view it's the connection between the display and the computing unit.

If your device is still under warranty I'd try returning it or speaking to CS first if there's a technician knowing more about this issue than I do. If it is really some hardware failure the device will have to be returned to be exchanged or it will have to be repaired. This can be done by sending the device to TT which will cost a bit or you'll try if a different display already helps. There are some here on this forum who already have some knowledge with changing a display so hopefully they'll give the necessary information therefore.

    Regards

    Lars.

Check the application version on your gps using "Operate my device" in Home.

Click on the bottom right blue bar to display the battery status. Below the battery status you will see a version number like 9.061.

To see if the display is working press and hold the power button for about 5 sec after you hear the drum beat. What should appear is a diagnostic screen with a black background a white text. If this shows up the display is ok.

It appears that the display is bad..... If the gps is under warranty tomtom will exchange your gps for another.  If you are handy with fixing things you can replace the screen yourself for around $50 us.

With my original problem, I contacted tomtom directly through their support section and the unit needed replacing (obviously a hardware fault).

Try re-installing the application (MAKE A BACKUP COPY FIRST THOUGH!) and if that still fails, just make sure you have proof of purchase if it's still under guarantee and contact tomtom support.

Can't find my receipt.  Bought it a Walmart with cc, but they won't ever call me back with the receipt info.  They just take my info and say they will look it up.  After I complained, they said that even if they found it, they could not send me the receipt.  Company policy says customer must come in to pick up receipt.  Since i canno do that (i am 1500 miles from store), they won't even bother to look it up.

I have the same problem. I have an XL 350 GK. I updated it with a file called "TomTom Application for Car and Motor Navigation" and that's when the problem started. I never have seen an update with that name before. I called Support and we tried formating it and still no screen. The girl says the display is probably gone, but I find it strange that it worked fine a few days ago when I did the GPS Fix and now all of a sudden it's got no display. I can use it with TomTom Home, but that's pretty useless on the road. It's not even 2 yrs old.

    Hey Guys

I have been dealing with this and I think the answer is pretty simple. The display screen in these devices, apparently requires

a bit more charge than that which is required for it to run its software. The current input from a laptop is not enough to fully charge the device to keep the screen active. Simply plug it into a standard USB/ wall adapter...if the GPS unit starts up and the screen appears, that is a good sign. Now just turn OFF the power on the GPS by depressing the power button until it shuts down. This will allow a complete charge to take place...enough to power the unit AND its display. Leave it charging a healthy length of time, at least an hour or two.

The way these units work is peculiar...sometimes the GPS comes on when I start my car, which powers the DC outlet. Sometimes it does NOT turn on until I press the power button. I think that the GPS may at times be on when the user thinks it is off, draining the power down to a minimum level. They are just designed poorly in this respect. This applies to Garmins, too. I believe I may have thrown away a good Garmin Nuvi because I thought the screen was shot, when it just need more charge to light up. Rob

There is a widespread bug with Tomtom HOME, where it improperly updates many models, and the blank screen is a common system.  Tomtom phone support has not been trained in the bug nor its fix.

You can manually do a proper update, but the file needed differs by model.   If anyone has this issue, post the first two letters of your serial number (on the bottom of the device) and we can provide steps unique to your model.

At last! Someone has written something which seems to make sense in my case. My XL2 updated, and I've only had a blank screen since. Support are suggesting corrupt internal memory, and an expensive repair, but I'm doubtful, since I've tried all the restore/reinstall/ reformat/ scandisk processes.

The version of navigator that I think has produced the problem is 9.510, but I can't see how to restore to an earlier version (I have no old backups - Home installed on a new computer at the point that I updated.)
