TomTom VIO Application not supported in your country

I have just purchased the TomTom Vio for my scooter but when I tried to install the application from google play store it said that "App is not supported in your country". I read on some forums that the country needs to have a map to be supported, so I went to to check and there was "Full European Map - 6MB". I am from Malta which is in Europe!!. So why not supported??.
I tried other forums and managed to download the app from elsewhere....forgot the site.
With the VIO switched on, the app is saying "Can't connect to Tom Tom. Try again later." and keeps repeating this over and over.
I tried to pair it with my mobile through bluetooth and it found the device, Vio, but on the Vio it comes a white screen with 3 dots and stays like that and nothing happens.

Please help me out as I am assuming that this is a waste of my money.

My mobile is a Samsung Note 8 with Android 7.1.1
The VIO app version I tried to install (not from Google Play Store) is Ver 1.5.

Many thanks

Hi JUV777,

Welcome to the community:)

Early 2017, I had posted a comment listing the countries where the VIO app is available for download on the Google Play Store, you can see it here

Ok so that is not the whole Europe. Any chance it will be available for my country too - Malta?

Available in Romania. Both Android and Ios.

You know that you can change your phone location to a country that has the app and install it from there.
Ok Adyluk, thanks for the tip but how do you change the location??

You can change the country in Google Play Store by following these steps.
  1. Go to Google Payments and sign in with your account.
  2. Click on Settings in the top right corner.
  3. Click Edit next to the Home address and update the address.
  4. Now, on your mobile device, open the PlayStore and try to buy any item. You don't need to complete the purchase, just proceed until you reach the 'Accept and Buy' screen.
  5. Now, close the Play Store and open the Settings app and go to Apps > All > Google Play Store. Then tap on 'Clear Data' button.
  6. Now, again open the Playstore app. The country would have been updated.

For IOS:

  1. On your device, tap Settings > [your name] > iTunes & App Store.
  2. Tap your Apple ID. If you're not signed in, sign in with the Apple ID and password that you use with the iTunes Store.
  3. Tap View Apple ID. You might be asked to authenticate your Apple ID.
  4. Tap Country/Region.
  5. Tap your new country or region, then tap Next.
  6. Review the Terms and Conditions and Apple Privacy Policy, then tap Agree if you agree.
  7. In the prompt that appears, tap Agree.
  8. Select a payment method and enter your new payment information. You have to enter a valid payment method for your new country or region.1 Learn more about how to change or remove your Apple ID payment information.
  9. Enter your billing address and tap Next.
Your Apple ID country or region updates for all of your Apple services on all of your Apple products

Please tell me if this worked for you!
Hello again Adyluk,
I tried two things but still failed 😞
First I tried with an app called Fake GPS, where i selected UK on the map but still couldn't find the VIO app on Google Store.
Secondly I tried the changing location from Google Play Store as you very well explained. But when I came to the part to buy something, I was given 3 options on how to pay:
  1. with PayPal, and as soon as I entered my user and pass it said that accounts don't match.
  2. By Visa, and as soon as the address was verified (i gave a fake UK address in Google settings), it did not match.
So, either i'm missing something or it cannot be done.

My mobile is the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
All I want the Vio is to serve as a "monitor" on my bike so that I will know who's calling. I don't mind if I cannot use the maps, though that will be great too.

I sincerely thank you for your great info and help.
Many thanks.

Try this:

Log into Gmail on your PC and change the billing address to the new address

On the phone, go to Settings, scroll down to Accounts and select Google. Select the account which the phone has been synced with and select Remove account at the bottom.

Once account has been removed go back to Settings main screen, select Apps, select Google Play Store, tap Force stop, confirm, then tap Clear data and tap Clear Cache.

Go back to Settings and select Accounts. Add account by selecting Google.

Once Google account has been added and setup on the phone go back to the main screen and open up playstore.

Alternatively you can search on google specially for S8 to have more personalized info. The android on S8 is customized by Samsung and may this has something to do with it.

I think also you can create a new google account located in UK or some other country that has this app. And use as an alternative account for the playstore. (you can have multiple google accounts on the same phone)
Ok will try. For sure I will let you know if I manage to get it to work. Otherwise I will have to sell it as it will, and is, of no use to me.
Thank you once again.

On PC on the google wallet you have settings. Under settings click on "go to payments center".
There you have settings. Click on settings an you will see a country. When you change it will ask you to create a new payment profile. You create a new profile with the country you wish. Afterwords follow the procedure mentioned above.
I know it seems a lot to do but it's worth it.

Otherwise you can create a new google account with the location in a new country (you can enter Romania, as it will not ask you for any payment methods). Delete the old account, clear cache and settings of the playstore, enter the new account download the app and afterwords reenter your old account.

Still I do not know why they do not make the app available in every country that has the available map.

I saw the device long time ago but bought it only after the app was available in my country.

Delete the Vio from the Bluetooth devices (from the phone). Then start the app and do the pairing from the app. Do not pair the VIO from the phone's menu.
adyluk - thank you for your advice but I stuck on the first sceen. I can not run VIO application. This is all what I can get from application :(

Do not know how to help you there. Try reinstalling the app and remove the Vio from BT Devices. Maybe keep the location of the phone on the same country as GP.

I’m only guessing here as I did not faced such a problem.
Hi, I just managed to change my location to UK in GP.
I deleted earlier instalation TomTom VIO, changed my location in GP to UK and for VIO application download I used VPN chanel. It works. I just downloading the maps! Huge step forward! Thank you for your help.

I used this gps to travel from Romania to Poland. Just a few problems with some areas where it insists to take you on the highway but this mai be due to bad info in some seconday roads/ border crossings. Otherwise it was great for our 2500km trip.
