Hello.

I've been waiting a lot to get TomTom for my mobile and today I've found that finally it's here.

My surprise has been that for my Xoom and for my former SGS2 i can buy and download the tomtom app but I cannot for my Galaxy S3 and I do really need TomTom for my SGS3 (i'm using my mobile as the only navigation system for my car and my bike). But Google Play Store tells me literally "Your device (SGS3) is not compatible with this version". But in the Motorola Xoom and the SGS2 I can buy without a problem. I've not bought yet because I need it for the only one that doesn't accept the software, my SGS3.

I've tried to buy from the webpage of Play Store in my computerand I got the same problem, they allow me to buy and send to SGS2 and Xoom but not to SGS3  :-(

Come on, guys! There are millions of SGS3 owners willing to buy TomTom! Give us a solution, please. I should buy before saturday because I'm in job trip the whole next week.

By the way, you say that screen resolution for the android app is 800x480 or 854x480.

SGS2 is 800 x 480, Xoom is 1280x800 and SGS3 is 1280x720... That makes no sense....

Hello all,

I can confirm that the next update, which will bring compatibility with the Samsung Galaxy S3, will be an update to the current version of the app, rather than a new version which needs to be purchased separately.

There are posts here indicating that once you buy an app, you can install the app on all Android devices you own.

If correct, then you could install onto one of those devices, and use on that device until the update for GS3 arrives.

Google Play probably wont let you install the app to the SGS3, but with other android apps, I found that if you purchase on one device, you cab sideload to other devices. Anyone brave enough to try?

Thank you for your answer. That's clear. But I DO NEED for the SGS3 now, not in december... I cannot use the xoom tablet (10 inches) at the bike or at the car... And my former SGS2 it's on my mother's hands, it's her phone now. That's the reason I wrote "former" refering to my SGS2.

I would like to know when they're going to update for SGS3 (20 millions units sold by the way) because If they're going to take a while to update sadly I would fe forced to buy Navigon or Sygic instead.

I could do that but first I've to extract the cab with a root program (I can do) but I have no guarantee of stability in SGS3...

If the only stated incompatibility is resolution, there's a good chance it will be stable, though things might be squished in a corner. And Tomtom has already promised compatibility by year end.

Since its a paid app I assume you'd need the same Google play acct on both devices.

I have Sygic on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, and have to say it was a dissapointment. Then again, I had been using TomTom on my iPhone 3Gs, so maybe the expectations were set kind of high.....

Sygic did a fair number of weird things for routining, sometimes missing a cross street that would have saved a lot of time. The street showed on the map, so Sygic knew about the street, it just sent me the long way around. Other instances as well.

I actually prefer the display on Sygic over TomTom in some ways, but that may have been because it can show more stuff on a 10.1" screen than it can on a 3.5"  or 4.8" screen.

I put the demo version of Sygic on my SG3 yesterday, and used it to go home. Very strange route, one which took much longer and was further to drive.

Sygic didn't license IQroutes from Tomtom which explains its inferior routing.

Thank you both for your experiencies about Sygic. IQ routes is a very important point to wait for TomTom.

I bought the app and downloaded it for my SGS2. Then I used AppMonster to backup the apk file and moved it to my SGS3. It seems to be working!

Surely it will not run in the natively 720p resulotion but neither does Navigon. Why have they set this resolution restriction on their app??????

You will notice that the app isn't optimised for the resolution of the SGS3.  A fully optimised version will be available by the end of the year.

Will this be an update for this app or some kind of extra app like TomTomHD?

This is really important for me to know, to decide if I buy now and transfer it to my Optimus 4X HD P880 or wait

Thanks Kenneth but unfortunately having waited for the October release that is not good enough. I would rather have a lower resolution version that can be upgraded but at the moment I have nothing. Tomtom should be ashamed!. I am going to take a punt with Sygic because at least they are trying to improve their customer experience rather than the flaky Tomtom promises.

That's a very important question for TomTom developers!!  Please answer it when possible. Thanks.

Guess I will buy it if I can find a device for me to log into with my play account, then transfer it across to my I9300. but I would also like to know if TomTom are being sneaky and trying to sell a separate (maybe more costly) HD version later. If you do I think you will have a small mutiny.

I have gone the APK route to force the app onto my SGS3 and I have to say the app is amazing, especially the speed/performance on such a high power device.  Another great thing is that there's no more carrying around a phone and a PND.  One device, that does it all.

Features are light compared to PNDs, but this is app 1.0, and it already does so so much more than the Tomtom iOS app's original 1.0.  I can only hope Tomtom packs on the features with each successive release, just like they did on iOS.

Yes, things on the screen look misaligned because of the un-optimized resolution, but nothing that really interrupts usability.

Most importantly, the HD traffic connection was flawless (unlike what was discussed in this thread for the PND models).  I have connected to HD traffic within 5 seconds, every time.  And it NEVER once had a congestion-related blackout.

Could you post a screenshot - and can you tell what range the HD Traffic is working to?

    Thanks!

    @Trentors & @MVL.

As per the previous posts any chance of a few screen shots to see what you guys are getting please ?

Also, not being as tech savvy as u guys on this (LOL -- and I work with tech), can you post a short guide on how you got this working please.

If you could do that would be great.

    Tkx

Buy the app from Google Play and download it to a compatbile device (like SGS 2).

    - Download the app "AppMonster" from Google Play (there is both a free and pay version - I used the latter).

    - With AppMonster backup the TomTom app.

    - It creates an apk-file in AppMonster's folder.

    - Copy this file to SGS3 and use a file explorer program (like Samsungs built-in) to open the file.

    - This will install the file on SGS3. However the program is not automatically updated since it did not come via Google Play.

TomTom is not telling the truth about resolutions. A lower resolution Android app will always work on a higher resolution display and many apps do this like Cut The Rope and even Navigon. But it is not in HD (looks great anyway).

TomTom has for some reason decided not let Google Play install this app on our devices even though it is fully compatible. They may hide behind the "it is not in the correct resolution" but that is rubbish since most apps are not run in the natively resolution. So this is an intentionally restriction on TomTom for Android.

Maybe they just haven completely left the habit of treating Android users like S*** :-(

I bet they will offer some kind of TomTomHD for new devices later without a sale price or maybe even more expensive.

The app isn't fully compatible with higher resolution devices:

    - the car icon isn't centered in landscape

    - the status bar has weird gaps in portrait

    - not all numbers fit in their boxes

    - view map is squished in the corner

    - etc, etc

So I certainly agree with TT for not selling this app directly to higher res devices until they get things fixed.  But it does work, and steps like you posted work flawlessly.

Just one key point on the install steps: The low-res device you buy the app on, and your high-res device you plan to use it on, have to have the same Google Play account, or else the app will fail due to license check

tks guys for your respective posts......

ironically, I just got rid on my SGS (version 1) so do not have another android device I can download too or registered to my google account.

I guess for me the best way is to wait out a bit longer and watch these threads.

    thanks again Brian

tt works great on my mediapad tablet 1280x800. moved apk from my phone (legally acquired license via google play of course) installed and downloaded maps. Only some glitches on menu and view not centered but shifted on the left... tt should take really a short time to expand compatibility, just fix the menu and correct zooming. Even junction view is already correctly showing ;)

unforunately (shame on you tomtom) autovelox and hdtraffic has to be repurchased with differrent tt account or moved from previous device

You can move speedcams and hd traffic back and forth across devices whenever you want.   You just can't use more than one device at the same time.
