This is not just a recent problem, but the mobile camera warning is given much too late. I was reminded of this driving on the A64 in North Yorkshire, where I know they do a lot of speed checks. I went around a corner on the dual carriageway and there was a speed camera van. I saw it before I got the warning, (mobile camera hotspot) and if I can see them, their laser gun can see me! I got another warning after that which was I think as a result of someone reporting it, this was even later. As it was very sunny I hadn't noticed the icon on the sidebar.

You really the warning much sooner for mobile cameras than static ones as the range of their devices is probably up to a quarter of a mile. Also, by the time someone has added it they are probably past it anyway, so the location will be a bit off.

Can something be done about this?

    Too add to the problem, you still can't report a hotspot as an active van as the report button is disabled until you leave the zone.
    Meaning I can't report the fact it has a van there.
    This means it can only stay as a likely camera warning.
    Why can't we get the option to do this?

    For an Improvement, over the default settings try.....
    Always use a Computer voice ... In the UK either Serena or Malcolm
    Also, Try.....
    From the main screen... Tap (.... Menu) -> Setting -> Sounds & Warnings...
    Set Warning Type to... Read Allowed
    (Important... Needs a Computer Voice set in the Voices menu i.e Serena UK)
    Speed Cameras & Hazards... Set to ON
    The next 10 Setting ALL set to Always
    The next 4 Settings ALL set to ON

    They are the settings I have. It is the lateness of the warning that is the problem.

    In 'related topics' at the bottom of this thread I see someone raised this same point two years ago. I only went back one year to see if it has been raised before. Since it would appear nothing has been done for at least two years perhaps someone from Tom Tom would like to comment.

    Hi Arnold,

    Thanks for reporting this!

    It sounds to me like there could be a couple of reasons to this. One is that the mobile camera was simply in a wrong place in our database and therefore the alert came late compared to where the camera actually was. If this was not the case and the camera was shown in the correct location, you've experienced a performance issue. In this case your device for some reason was not able to process everything it was doing quick enough to give you the alert in time.

    In the first scenario, all you can do is to report the camera in the correct place. As mobile cameras are reported on the fly and the locations can change very quickly, we in most cases cannot double check them and it's possible that there are some discrepancies with the actual location

    The issue is that the same amount of warning is given for fixed and mobile cameras. Fixed cameras check your speed as you pass them. Mobile cameras most likely use a laser and have a range of a few hundred yards. Therefore you need warning of a mobile camera much sooner than you do for a fixed camera. On a 70 road, the warning needs to be about 3/4 mile in advance for a mobile camera to be of any use.

    Mikkok - it's been logged for at least a year. We don't need to know if it's been logged, we need to know if and when it will be fixed. That way we, and potential buyers, can make an informed decision as to whether to buy a TomTom or a device from a company that listens to its users.

    If this isn't fixed then my next device will be a Road Angel. My car does navigation perfectly well, it just doesn't do speed cameras.

    So, to other readers, if you've stumbled on this while researching your next purchase - the TomTom GO 5000 and 5100 have serious problems with speed cameras:
    - you can't change the warning timing and with mobile cameras it comes far too late;
    - the volume of the warning is very quiet, even at maximum level and I struggle to hear it over road noise (my hearing is good);
    - you can't add your own customized warnings like you could with older units.

    If speed cameras are important to you then you might want to borrow a 5000/5100 from someone before spending the money. I wish I'd bought something different.

    Well, I have 5 Tomtom navigators: For Android, Live 1005 , GO 500, Start 20 and another start 20, I can feel exactly like Arnold. The warning for FIXED cameras in all my navigators are TO LATE. Sometimes it just warning about 10 meters of Fixed cameras. It happens in all for what make me think that is a software problem. It culd bevery useful if we have the same options that a gps frm Netherlands have, that allow you setup the distance you want the alert: 50 yards, 100 yards, 200 yards, 300 yards. The software reads the database and let you know in advance.
    Another question: My Tomtom Live 1005 and both Start 20 has a button to REPORT (or ADD) CAMERAS and I can't find it on the Go 500, I can't find on my Tomtom for Android? This function is not on the new software version or am I doing something Wton cozI can't find it.

    On the Go 500, with the current software version, you should find the camera icon to add a speed camera on the right hand side where your current speed is displayed. So when you are driving it is always shown on the main screen.

    Hi Newton,

    The camera warnings are given 15 seconds before you reach a camera location. It sounds like you're experiencing the kind of performance issue I described above. Factory resetting navigation devices mostly help with these issues. Also make sure your devices are getting sufficient power.

    On GO Mobile there are power saving settings you could try to improve the apps performance on your phone.

    I passed some mobile speed camera locations on the A14 today, near Newmarket and Stowmarket. The mobile camera warnings were given at a distance of 450 yards. The locations are fixed, one is a flyover and the other is a small lay by. At 70 mph I suppose this is about 15 seconds warning, but of the location, not that you are in range of the laser gun. There were no camera vans there today, but in each case I was within laser distance by the time I got the warning. This really is not good enough for a premium service.

    Thnaks so much for your reply Arnold but definitelly N. I can't find it on my navigator.
    My current speed is not shown on right hand side . Its shown in the bottom middle of the screen. When pressed I have 3 options and it's not related to the cameras.
    My applicationversion is 17.2000011.311 (0) 25/06/2017
    It's the latest update I've did yesterday to certiify It was not my fault
    Some of the guys have a clue, please?

    I barelly use tom tom on mobile for driving. I use more for walking into unknow cities. You could help me advising how I can get the button to add or report cameras on my Go500 Model 4FA50 4FA5.001.06

    newton.borges - my suggestion about the location of the speed camera button location unfortunately missed out the word 'of'. What I was trying to say was that it is now on the main screen to the right of where your current speed is displayed, i.e. at the bottom of the screen. It is a small camera icon on the right hand side of the box that contains your current speed display.

    Hey Arnold,I've been playing around with my GO500. Deleted the maps, reset to fctoring option, connected to my drive on PC and reinstalled everything yesterday night.

    After that, went through ALL FUNCTIONS, one by one and dtill not find the blessed button. Definitelly, there's no button to add or report cameras on my satnav.

    Remember you need to be logged into MyDrive according to here in the online manual

    Reporting a new speed camera


    If you pass a new speed camera that you were not warned about, you can report it instantly.

    Note: To report a speed camera, you must be connected to TomTom services and logged in to your TomTom account.
    You can report a speed camera in two ways:

    Using the quick menu to report a speed camera
    Select the current location symbol or the speed panel in the guidance view.
    Select Report Speed Camera from the pop-up menu.
    You see a message thanking you for adding the camera.

    Tip: If you make a mistake when reporting a camera, select Cancel in the message.
    The speed camera is saved on your GO automatically and also sent to other users.

    Using the Main Menu to report a speed camera
    Select the Main Menu button to open the Main Menu.


    Select Report Speed Camera.



    You see a message thanking you for adding the camera.

    Tip: If you make a mistake when reporting a camera, select Cancel in the message.
    The speed camera is saved on your GO automatically and also sent to other users.

    Hi Niall, thnaks for your very clearly explanation. I'll be heading towards Scotland early this night and gonna try to find it as I got many cameras last week that was not on my database. I'm always connected to ToTom Services Throug my mobile and works perfect. WHen I touch the speed and the pop-up menu comes with 3 options but not Camera report. What I got there is to report a correct speed limiton the way, etc

    As I told above, I've been trying this morning while my chap drove and I cannot take it as well from the mani menu. I'll really looking into this tonight and takeing some pictures to post here.
    I'll follow all the stes you wrote above and try again, but I never found this icon (button) you attached. It's not on my satnav... lol

    Maybe it is a conflict between the "Live" accounts between your 500 and the 1005 Live. Hopefully you have not too many personal ' My Places' on your 500, so you could try a factory reset on it and change the email address / 'user ID' on it (it can be a fictitious email address)
