Pretty much any strap that uses Bluetooth LE should  work.  This includes both chest straps as well as optical sensors like the Mio and Scosche.  I have used the TomTom strap, the Wahoo Blue strap and the Scosche Rhythm+ and they all work very well.  I prefer the Scosche as it sits on the arm, not on the chest so it is not irritating.  Stick with a major manufacturer and you should be fine.

Please excuse me for chiming in on an old thread, but heres a TomTom support page that lists all the tested HRM (which also includes the ones noted by TF as well as a few others).

Which sensors are compatible with TomTom Runner & Multi-Sport?

Put the Rhythm+ on, turn it on, press down from the clock and go to Sensors> Heart and make sure it is set to on. It should pick it right up. I just tested it on mine with no problems. If it is not reading it, there may be a problem with the strap. Make sure it is blinking purple, which indicates it has made a BT connection.
Hi, thank you very much for your instructions. I tried to follow them, but unsuccessfully. I have a Rhythm RTHM1.9. Do you have the same version? I put the Rhythm on, press down from the clock and go to Sensors> Heart and set to ON. The Rhythm+ fast 3times blink blue and after it is blinking blue slowly. When I start to do something and my heart rate going up a it is blinking purple and sometimes red. I tested the strap with my phone and everything was OK (bluetooht and ant+). I think that the Rhythm+ is functional. But TomTom heart menu with ON/OFF choise is still displaying a two commas. Which means, that is still looking for the device. Any other ideas?

I am not sure why it is not working for you. All I can think of is that there may be a problem in your firmware image. I would suggest doing a factory reset which will clear the watch and reinstall a fresh image, which may solve the issue. If it does not I would suggest calling Customer Support and seeing what they can do. They are able to more deeply investigate and diagnose problems than we can here on the user forum.

To do a factory reset, make sure the Connect software is running and dock the watch to your computer. The Connect window will open up and you will see a button at the bottom of the window that says "Factory Reset". Press it and follow the steps provided. It is fairly straightforward and should take less than 10 minutes.

To get the number for Customer Support, go to http://tomtom.com/support, choose Contact Us, and fill out the web from (select the Sports Watch and the issue - doesn't matter which one) it will show the Phone Us button, Press it and choose your country for the phone number.

I hope this helps, please let me know if this answered your question. If it did, please mark it as a solution so others can look for it if they have the same question.
I have 2 Scosche Rhythm+'s. The first one i got works great(1.9EU). the two newer (1.9 ) ones i have gotten do not work with my tomtom multisport watches[i had one of each so got my better half the same][it works with everything else i have tried].
has anyone gotten the latest version[it blinks blue instead of purple when bluetooth connection made] of the scosche rhythm+ to work.

How can you tell what version of the Rhythm+ you have? Mine has no serial number or version number on it anywhere, nor is it on the packaging. Since the older versions work, it appears Scosche changed something in their protocols to make it incompatible. You may want to reach out to Scosche and see if they can help as the issue appears to be on their end, not TomTom's.
it's written on the user guide at the front near the top and there should be a date printed on that too in MM/YY format[BOTTOM CORNER]. I'm reaching out to both ends at the same time to try and get them to meet in the middle somewhere 🙂 i would have had no idea but could tell it behaved differently to my other one.

Mine is a 1.9EU, dated 6/14. I think the difference may not be a firmware one, but a regional one, perhaps EU stands for Europe (although I am in the US so that sort of fails in logic)? I searched Scosche's website and can find nothing about the difference in the versions.
i'm in US too. (Texas) tho it's the 1.9EU of mine that works.
i was finaly able to get mine working. scosche sent me the file for firmware 2.4.

1) Download and install the Scosche Fitness Utility App to your iPhone (available on iTunes)
2) Launch the App and your RHYTHM+ will connect automatically (As a precaution kill any other fitness apps that might try and connect to RHYTHM+)
3) From your email select the attached file and open it with the fitness utility App (selecting the file will bring up a list of apps to open the file with – just keep swiping to the right until you see the Fitness Utility App)
this is the file -->
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0TQ2VB7HHxgU0d3bW1pTkVUT19WTWpQSVVINF96M1VKcTI0/view?usp=sharing

4) Select the commands Tab and scroll to the very bottom. You will see Firmware update and a “Start” button.
5) Once you press “Start” the update will begin.
6) RHYTHM+ must be charged to 50% or more to allow firmware updates (so the battery won’t die during the update)
7) Be sure to kill the Fitness Utility App when you are done to disconnect from the armband and initiate the connection with your watch.”

Did the firmware update impact anything else? Battery life, accuracy, etc.?
I haven't noticed anything. the led will now show purple for bluetooth and red for ant+. it won't be able to be switched back to the updatable version of the firmware without sending to scosche.
