There it is, sitting on the book-shelf in the spare room, not connected to anything - no 12v supply, no TMC(?) radio add-on (that's in the car) and fully charged when it was put there a week or so ago. For some reason my TomTom Go v3 turns itself on and just sits there wasting its battery.

OK, so I turn it off and leave it where it is. Some few days later it does the same thing - turn itself on.

It does it every now and again - no pattern to it from what I can see. It just turns itself on by itself and sits there on the shelf.....waiting.......

Why does it do this? Any ideas?

Thanks in hope....

Dave

This problem has been brought up before in the forum. Try this link::http://discussions.tomtom.com/t5/TomTom-ONE-Start-EASE-HOME/tom-tom-one-classic-powers-on-by-itself/m-p/49931#M1686

There also was a post elsewhere which had another fix, but I could not find it. I believe it was a software fix.

Many thanks to one and all who responded (both here and in other posts re this problem), including Holly in Support.

I've not had another self-power-on since removing the ONE Application and re-installing it - this is 3 weeks since this action was taken.

I feel I can consider this solution was the fix. I hope I'm not speaking too early as this problem was random and intermittent - but so far so good.

    Dave

PS Thanks to the forum for simply being there and available!

have had the same problem with my tomtom one XL330. It has been replaced two times by tomtom and it still has the same problem.  Tomtom has no fix for this problem it is a factory default and all tomtom products should be recalled and taken off the market

I've had the same problem with my V3 for over 2 years. I contacted support and they could not fix it.

Unexplained switch ons, or .... in the middle of the night being woken up by a female voice telling me to turn right.

Eventually, I just gave up and bit the bullet, as I'd had enough ......

So today. I just ordered a new 550.

    I hope that works better.

Try a soft reset (link in my signature) or reload the whole software completely:

    1. Save everything from the device/card, using Explorer (or Finder on Mac), include all the files (hidden as well). It is also known as a manual backup: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13354/

    2. Then format the internal storage (or memory card, depending which one you use) of your device. Use the COMPLETE format, not the quick. http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12412/

    3. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again (in the new TomTom HOME app it is on the second page). At this point you might have to disconnect the device a few times and switch it ON/OFF to enable it to setup some important stuff.

    4. Copy your voices and post codes back to the device (also the maps if that didn't download either).

All Tomtom models on app 8.0 will turn themselves on exactly 1 week after they shut down.  This is a bug in the 2008-era software on those devices.   It does not affect newer devices with app 9 or later.

The workaround is to do a special bios-shutoff.   There are two ways, depending on whether your device has a pinhole reset button on the bottom.

For models with a reset button:

    - hold the power button down, then insert a pin in the reset button hole, then remove the pin while still holding the power button

    - eventually you get to a black screen with white letters.  On that screen release the power button.

    - tap the power button quickly one more time to shut off

For models without a reset button:

    - hold the power button down, wait for a drumroll sound, and keep holding the power button

    - eventually you get to a black screen with white letters.  On that screen release the power button.

    - tap the power button quickly one more time to shut off

When you do the shutoff procedure above, the device will not self-turn-on after a week.

edit: corrected app version to more generic 8.0.   This issue impacts both app 8.01x and 8.08x devices.

Do you have to do the bios reset everytime you shut down the tomtom, or is it a cure?

I'll report back myself if it cures it.

    I hope so.

You need the bios reset every time you don't want it to turn back on in a week.

If you intend to use it more frequently, then no need.

Ahhh. I see - Thanks then.

I only use it every few months, when I go walking or on my motorbike. So it's always a dead screen.  I actually purchased a GO 550 from the Tomtom shop,  to replace it - but the battery on that only lasts between 8 to 15 minutes (from new).

So both my Tomtoms are pretty useless.

Tomtom support say to remove and reinstall the program application -  I might try that (carefully)

    :)

    Yeah.

    I did a back up.

I copied & pasted it in ... so many times. The Tomtom went through the motions. It did all the updates for the installed maps.

Then, when switched off & on again - the message 'No Maps Found' came up.

So ensued a lot of head scratching, stamping of feet & gnashing of teeth.

THEN, I remembered that I had an old Toshiba laptop that I used to use, that had given up the will to live (it was THAT old that I'm sure iit was gas powered).

So I dug out the hard drive & hooked it up to this computer using a docking station.

Lo & behold - I found an old maps file on there.

So I crossed my fingers, eyes & legs & copied it.

    IT WORKED !!!

I can only assume that the original copy must have been corrupt in some way.

If I ever do this again ... I'm going to make sure that I do TWO copies

    *laughing*

Anyway. I've followed the advice given on the various threads and by Tomtom customer support on these threads - (clearing flash, reloading software etc). As when I contacted Customer Support, they could not help me.

I'll report back in a few weeks to tell you guys if it worked or not.  Now I need to start clicking that 'Kudos' button.

    HAPPY NEY YEAR !!

The GO550 runs app 9.510, so it will not be affected by the 1-week poweron bug.

If I recall properly, the GO550 was only sold in the LIVE edition in the UK.  That means it has a built in modem, which gets realtime traffic/weather/speedcams/etc, but does drain battery very quickly.

If you don't use that LIVE service, try changing the information sharing to "no", as it should turn off the modem and maybe extend the battery life.

    UPDATE -

Dagnabbit - it switched on, by itself,  again :(

I've also tried mvl's suggested bios shut off, but my device will not accept the power button commands that he advised, since my re-install.

Also, since re-installing the software, the device bypasses the TomTom start up screen & immediately goes straight to my last map.

    *sigh*

That's right. It's going into standby & not doing a bios shut off as MVL described. So it will power up again, on its own, in a weeks time.

Can you think (or have seen) anything else that I could try?

Does your model have a reset pin on the bottom?  If so I think you may be able to just press that pin and it will never again self-poweron.   The more I think of it (knowing how the software works, I think my "with a reset pin" instructions may be wrong.

Are you saying that the device suspends when you press the power button?  Have you tried letting it suspend but keep on holding the power button?   Other than models with a reset pinhole, this procedure worked 100% to my knowledge, just see you may have to wait up to 30 seconds (holding the power button) to get to that black bios screen.
