If the screen has stopped responding it may be the internal memory at fault, it is unusual for it to be a screen fault. I don't think you have a slot for an sd card on your device so you can't bypass the internal memory, assuming you do have a back-up of the One's contents on your computer?. So I think you need to phone TT customer support for this.

Try to have the tomtom off and connect it to the computer. Once its connected turn it on. If it goes to the "Do you want to connect to the computer?" screen simply find a push pin or a paper clip and push and HOLD in the reset button on the bottom side of the gps. The tomtom will turn off but remain HOLDING in the reset button. Count 30 seconds slowly and then release the button and power on the device. This is to force the GPS to connect to the computer. See,when the screen loses the touch response its basically caused by the TomTom Application being outdated or corrupted. Once connected to the pc you then can go inside TomTom HOME and get all the updates. We can also walk you through it if you Prefer? Call us 1866-486-6866.

And what is your criteria for an application being 'outdated' may I ask? I mean the 'latest' app for the x20 and x30 seies is 8.351 and it was released in May 2009, almost two years ago!!! Isn't that old?

Candidly, I don't agree with just about any part of your answer:

    1. You do NOT have to hold the reset button for 30 seconds to cause a reboot of the unit, no where near that.

    2. Lack of touch screen sensitivity is rarely, if ever, caused by an 'out of date' or 'corrupt' application. I mean when a unit is working and then suddendly loses sensitivety, how did the application suddenly become 'out of date' or 'corrupt'?

Can it be the reason? Maybe,  but so can a hardware fault in the unit.

DHN let me ask you this. Did you see anywhere in this post an application version? Was it ever explained what version of the application was installed on the ONE 3rd Edition? No. So........maybe,JUST maybe the application version currently on the device is OUTDATED? OLD? CORRUPTED? If the 8.351 that is the latest for this device is currently no on this device then maybe it needs to be updated. You dont have to "agree" with any of my answers, thats fine.

    1. It can take anywhere between 15 and 30 Seconds to reboot the Unit, anywhere inbetween that.

    2. Lack of touch screen sensitivity is often caused by the application going bad,or out of date.

It can be a hadware issue. But Commonly this issue is caused by the application. If you go for the application as I stated before first and the issue is still the same? THEN,it may be a hardware problem and until then you want to remove and reinstall the application.

I agree that no application was mentioned. No argument there. I guess we can agree to disagree what the likely cause of the touch screen suddendly not working is.

But you haven't answered how a touch screen is working, then the user shuts the unit off and when next turns it on, how the application has become 'old' or 'corrupt' while the unit was off.

I also do not believe it takes 30 seconds of depressing the reset before a unit reboots. Mind you I only have three of my five different models here with reset holes to judge from personal experience.

I have to agree. Forums have thousands of members who post problems and fixes everyday. Some of us spend hours a day looking at these posts, and have a good understanding of the issues. We are dedicated Tomtom users, which, I assume, is what TT wants. But our relationship with CS does get strained, when we experience less than expert advice, or get taken through the same old rigmarole that we know will not work, or even get the brush off.

But where did the User say it was working and then powered off and now once powered on the screen dont respond?

    User never stated this.

It can take up to 30 seconds to give a soft reset. UP to 30 seconds.

I would have to agree with DHN. Simply because an application is outdated wouldn't cause the screen to not function correctly. With that line of thinking the majority of computer systems would stop working after a few years simply because the software is outdated. I have a GO 300 sitting here with a version 6 app on it and it works fine.

Corrupt application can certainly cause erratic behaviour with the device, including touch screen problems. So can dirt under the bezel, or a fault in the hardware itself. But I've never encountered an outdated software causing an issue with the screen.

The only thing I can think of where an outdated app would cause something like that is after a bootloader update and then backdating to an earlier app. But I haven't ever seen that in my time with TomTom.

To close, your absolutely correct Wyvern, these forums are for TomTom users. To allow you an avenue to provide solutions or issues you may be having to fellow TomTom users. We are here more to add our input if it becomes necessary to do so. As some of us are privy to more information than the average user. I've also learned never to dismiss some of the suggestions that may seem like there is no way that could work. Which end up solving the issue.

AndrewV: I was quite surprised that TT provided this Forum. There are not many manufacturers who would be prepared to acknowledge their products were not faultless and that they did not know everything about how to get them to work properly. It felt to me that there was a return to the earlier times when TT was open to a wider community of users where everyone [including TT] was working towards getting satellite navigation to be as good as it could be. Some tension seems to have grown between TT and forum users as, perhaps, more commercial pressures have grown? Some of the most knowledgeable people barely have a presence here. As I've contributed here I've become more aware of 'divided loyalty' between wanting TT to offer the best products and the best support, and people who have invested selflessly in other Forums in offering support and information when TT has, I'm afraid, often fallen short.

    Hi there,

I called CS after my TT one 3rd edition's touch screedn was acting screwy: wherever you touched the screen, the left-most button laterally parallel to the location touched, would be selected. I thought it was a goner, but I followed the CS instructions to reset the device, delete the app, and reload the app with updates. And it worked! It's happily functioning once again.

    Good luck,

    Jcv

    Ahem.

I hereby retract my previous comment, that my TT One is fixed. It is not. I followed cs's advice, reset, deleted app, reloaded app, and voila! A miracle! ...Then, 1 day later, kaput.

    So, good luck.

I've had this TT One 3rd edition for 18 months.  I have been trying to correct it's issues, which started out of the blue without warning and it has had since early April.  When I tried to navigate to an address, every time I hit a key on the right a key on the left would respond.  I reset the unit to no avail.  I connected it to Home and ran an update.  After that it seemed to work properly.  However, that was short lived.  It would respond to a few touches, then freeze again.  It would respond to the touch again later, sometimes 10 minutes later sometimes an hour or more later.  I tried resetting and updating from Home again with the same results.  It worked for a while, freeze for a while, then maybe work again.  I can turn it off and let it sit.  Whenever I go back to it, it always comes on to the page it froze on.  I wanted to try removing the application and reinstalling it, but I had to again reset my TomTom because it wouldn't accept the "yes" tap to connect to the Internet.  After resetting it, I was able to connect to Home, remove the application and reinstall it.  However, nothing changed.  When I turned it on, it went past the first page to the legal notice, but it wouldn't accept the tap on "I agree"  So I tapped it several times trying to get a response.  All that accomplished was to rapidly take me through several pages once it finally responded.  It ended up on a page with a key pad.  Again, any time I tried to tap anything on the right, a key on the left would respond.  So I couldn't back out of it or anything.  I also noticed something else.  I had tried using Home to navigate to a location.  The address I input was accepted online but the address shown on the TomTom wasn't the house numberI had chosen.  Thinking maybe I wasn't getting a clear satellite signal, I stood outside for awhile, but that made no difference.  I have tried everything suggested including checking the device's memory for errors and changing the calibration of the screen.  So far, nothing has worked.  I also tried cleaning under the bezel to remove any possible grit that may prevent the screen from working correctly.  I really feel like there is just some minor problem that if we could ever find the fix, my TT would work great again.  I hate to have to buy a new GPS, especially since I purchased a year of map updates so everything is current.  Anyone have any other suggestions?  Much appreciated!

We got a tomtom1 for Christmas in 2006.  Every since day one, there are times it will not come on.  We work with it and finally get it to come on... sometimes after several minutes.  We were traveling several hundred miles yesterday and the tomtom was working fine.  Stopped for overnight and you guessed it, it would not come on.  After probably 15 minutes, finally got it to come on (by continually pushing the on button).  Got home, turned it off and after a few minutes (curious) turned it on to see if it would work.  It would not come on.  Finally after again working with it, it did come on, but this time the screen was froze and would not work, nor could we  turn it off.  We tried everything we could think off, and thanks to comments on this site, we set the reset at the bottom of the tomtom (didn't even know it was there).  It automatically shut it down.  We were able to turn it back on and the touch screen was working.  In this instance the only thing we did was push in on the reset for a few seconds.  Thanks to everyone.  I am glad I read items on this site.   Now maybe tomorrow will be a different story, but right now I am happy it is working.

Would you be able to answer why the entire TomTom is just frozen.  It doesn't do anything.  When it turns on it's frozen at the screen and doesn't do anything else.  Can't get to ANYTHING.  Please advise.  Where do you take a TomTom to get fixed.  This TomTom was only used about a dozen times.

That is what ours did, but by resetting it, it has been working fine..... except again we are experiencing maybe it will come on, on the first try, maybe it won't.  However, as far as the touch screen not working.... that has not happened again since we reset it.  We used it today, driving  a couple of hundred miles and it worked just fine.  I don't know where you take them to get them fixed, and I don't know why we experienced the fact that the one time the touch screen definitely would not work.  We are looking to buy a new one since ours in now about five years old.  It is a Tomtom One, and I can say we have certainly enjoyed having it.... lt has been a life saver in more ways than one..... so we overlook the fact that it doesn't always come on immediately... periodically.  I would not want to do without one..... I wish I could give you more information, but I can only tell you what we have experienced.

I must agree with everyone who says the TomTom One series is rubbish, it is.

I've had nothing but trouble from the device since we bought one.

    Have tried the following:

    Re-installing sofware from original.

    Updating software.

    Running "Clear Flash.exe"

    Running Check Disk

Soft reset (with unit on - press reset button for one second)

Hard reset (with unit on - press reset button for 20+ seconds)

Sometimes it works, most times it doesn't.

This must be the worst piece of equipment I have ever purchased.

Will definitely not buy anything from this manufacturer again and certainly not recommend to friends (just the oposite, anyone but TomTom)

It seems to work until you connect with Tom Tom at HOme and update software or maps.  I just spent $70 to get updated maps and now my One does not work..Ironic to say the least...I think Tom Tom should upgrade us for free...top model I think.
