Hi guys,

My TomTom Start (1EX00) will not boot up, it is stuck on the start screen.

I have used tomtom home and removed the application from the device and then downloaded and installed the replacement.

I have tried backing up the contents of the storage, and doing a full fat32 format.

I have run a chkdsk on the drive with both tick boxes and no errors.

Yet I still can't get the device to boot.

I have run the tomtom home update utility a number of times and there are no updates available.

Any suggestions greatfully appreciated.

I've had this on a previous device for a friend and an app replace worked, but not happening this time round.

Cheers in advance for your help.

ok, I got me hands on another of these devices and made a backup of that except the maps, Have then formatted mine again and transferred all the contents from the working backup onto this and then copied my maps from my backup, and for some reason, hey presto, fully working.

I checked the version from the other device to see what was installed and it says 'TomTom application for GO, XL, ONE and Rider' version 9.057.

Confused on that one as i installed 9.053 and home updated to 9.057 and the system hung on startup again, dunno how that was but its up and running.

WOOHOO!!!

Credit to all you guys for your assistance, thankyou very much! :D

    Hi,

did you try resetting your device? If not, press and hold the power button until you hear the drum roll (approx. 15 seconds). Afterwards try to start your device.

Did you completely charge your device (approx. 4 hours)?

Does your device start when connected to a power source?

    Regards

    Lars.

    Cheers for your quick response

Holding the power button even for 30secs does nothing but remain on the stuck startup screen.

The device does have a pinhole reset which as soon as the button is pressed the device immediately powers down, and keep holding does nothing.

The device has been charged overnight.

When connected to a power source, does not power itself up, but pressing the button turns it on and it gets as far as the stuck startup screen.

    Cheers for your help

Can you connect your pc to the gps and does Home see the gps? You may need to remove and reinstall the software in the gps. If your pc can communicate with the pc. The first step is to create a backup to preserve the map date. Here is a link for backing up the gps
    http://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.html

Once a backup is created you can safely remove and restore the software in the gps. Here is a link for that.

I have tried that already more than once anf formatting the system using full fat 32 format, sd formatters, full chkdsk but when I restore my gps using the home update and copying my maps back, the gps still remains non booting.  I have tried formatting again and restoring all my original from back up and still no boot.  chkdsk says the drive is fine, but cant see why it wont boot?

Plug your gps in the computer and in "Home" -> "Manage my device"   the click on the + sign to the left of "applicaiton", then click on "more info". What version number is it showing installed on the gps? Also what are the first two letters of your serial number?

The app version is currently 8.544

I'm assuming the serial number is the one below the barcode which is XC

I think it should be 9.053. But I am not an expert on version versus model including special editions versions. We need user DHN right now. Who will probably show up sometime today.

In the mean time try this. With the gps plugged into the computer, Go to Home -> Manage my device. Remove all the applications (if more then one showing) from your device. Then switch to "Items on computer" and remove all applications shown there.

    1.  Perform an update. Once updates are completed disconnect the gps and restart it. Don't worry if it hangs up.

    2.  Plug your gps in your computer again and perform another update.

    3. Perform steps 1 and 2 until Home reports there are no further updates.

    Progress update

have manually downloaded and copied the files for version 9.053 (after another full format of course), the device then booted but said no maps found.  having then copied my maps folder (United_Kingdom_and_Republic_of_Ireland), zip folder and voices folder, the device booted, but there was only text, no icons, if i click on plan route, the device freezes for about 30secs then reboots itself, if i go into settings, once again, the text is there but no icons and i can change settings.

I hooked the device upto the pc and back into tthome where it said to update to 9.057, having let it do the update, the device hangs again on reboot.

making progress but still not working

What computer operating system do you have? If english is not your native language, use your language and I will let the computer translate on this end.

Please provide as many details of your problem as you can.

I've just paid out for new maps and now TomTom one XL is stuck.  I can use the memory card in my computer and in our TomTom Rider.  When I put it in the divice, the devide comes on an sticks on a screen that looks like a sceen for a science fiction movie.  It's been like this for a couple of months.  The device works OK when I plug it into the computer.  I've follwed all the instructions, reset i loads of times and it is still the same.  Once turned on it stays on and you can't turn it off.  Any ideas please?

I am assuming that you bought the map on an SD card.  Did you use the card first in the XL  or the Rider.

What are the first two characters of the serial numbers of the XL and Rider?

First try resetting the gps by holding the power button until you hear a drum beat ( aprox 20 sec )

Next try uninstalling and reinstalling the software in the gps. If this does not fix the problem take the gps back for exchange.

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Reinstalling the software:

First: make a backup of the contents of the gps using windows explorer. Per this link.
    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/15941/kw/backup

addition information about manual backup and restore can be found at this link
    http://www.tomtomforums.com/general-tomtom-discussion/17864-how-backup-contents-your-unit-computer.html

Second: check the flash memory in the gps to make sure there are no errors.
    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9908/kw/memory%20error

Third: If the memory has no errors or they were repaired by the check disk utility you just ran, uninstall the software on the gps and reinstall it.

    http://us.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/2053/kw/reinstall

Note: when reinstalling the gps software you may have to perform up to three updates to get everything installed. The  gps may not work correctly until all the updates are installed. Be sure to restart Home and the gps between each update. If the gps won't connect to the computer normally just reset the gps with it connected to the computer. The gps should automatically try to connect to the pc.

Forth: If the gps is working now, there are a few misc files like startup / shutdown screens that you can copy back to the gps from the backup copynyou made. Here is a list of those files. Just use windows explorer to copy them from the main directory of the backup to the main directory in the gps. Do worry if you do not find all these files are not on your backup. Not all gps models have all these files.

     1. antitheftw.bmp   (this may have the named antitheft.bmp)
     2. autorun.inf
     3. splashw.bmp      (this may have the named splash.bmp)
     4. suspendw.bmp     (this may have the named suspend.bmp)
     5. tomtom.ico

If everything is working ok now we recommend making a final backup of your gps. That way if something happens in the future all you have to do is delete everything on the gps and copy the backup to the gps and you are done.

I went through all scenarios that 'customer care' suggested to no avail but.... there is hope.

open the device and disconnect the battery. [If you are not sure of doing this, try the web for instructions] - (battery replacement sellers have instructions)
Re-connect a few seconds later - hey presto - it worked for me.
