    Hi,

    To answer your questions:

    1. The new Start 20 does have a micro SD slot, this will be activated this summer for you to use.

    2. The add voices feature we are expecting to add soon to MyTomTom.  I do not have an exact release date for this so would recommend signing up for notications of the new features for MyTomTom.

A late addition to this thread - I've just bought a Start 20 Europe, expecting an SD card slot as per the Tomtom website specification. Apparently, it seems to have no such slot, unless it's very cunningly hidden.

Why not? Have I bought some old stock? Should I return it?

    More :(   I'm afraid.

...and I can answer my own question!  Having examined the device carefully while waiting for new maps to download, I unplug - and there it is - the card slot. Feindishly cunning....

    Happy now! :smileyvery-happy:

Why then doesn't the Start 20 series reference guide which I downloaded only a couple of days ago mention the SD card slot?

    Hi,

it mentions the SD card slot as there is one in your device. That it isn't usable is not due to your device but due to software troubles TT's staff is trying to solve since some time.

Not belonging to TT's staff I cannot tell you more about the state of their developments but I suspect they'll get along with it and sometime they'll have all the features implemented they promised.

    Regards

    Lars.

"it mentions the SD card slot as there is one in your device."

You must have a different version of the Start 20 series reference guide, because the PDF I downloaded doesn't contain the words SD or card or slot and I've done a thorough search.

    Hi there,

sorry, I read that the card slot would be mentioned in the user's guide. That it isn't included in the description may be due to the cause that to my knowledge the SD card functionality still is not usable with the navcore 10 devices.

So I assume that the information about the SD card slot will be added as soon as it is enabled. If you have a look at the user guides you'll see that they get updated from time to time as well.

Are you at least able to find the SD slot your device? offers  If not have a look at the bottom side near the USB socket.

    Regards

    Lars.

    So does it work now?

I only just got that TOMTOM assuming that if the homepage say it will work form summer 2011 onwards it should work now then.

    So does it??

Brrrrr,  getting a bit chilly now whilst waiting for the summer software fix to enable the SD slot.

School boy error by TomTom originally commiting to a time frame for the fix.  The new line in the tech specs ("SD Slot -  Will be enabled with a new, free Software release") will be much more reassuring to the product manager.

Not so comforting is the continued reference to the as yet unavailable QuickGPSfix ("will be available as a download through MyTomTom in the near future").  Where's that sitting on the product backlog I wonder?

I'm off to feed the unicorns.

    Hi all,

the sd card slot is not yet enabled. It will be in a future update I'm sure but I don't know when that'll come.

I have just  bought one of these too, I hope I haven't made a mistake, when I want to go France touring I need the SD slot for Europe maps. Is this why there's a lot of these for sale on eBay?

    Hi,

I don't know if there are many for sale on eBay. But the card slot has been enabled now so you'll be able to install maps of version v885 onto the Sd card. You'll be able to use cards with up to 32GB memory and please use at least a Class4 card, better a Class6 card.

    Regards

    Lars.

Hi Badgerdid. Are you able to confirm if the SD slot has actually been enabled with the latest update?

    Thanks!

    Hi,

on NAV3 devices an inserted microSD card is a memory extension. So everything will be installed primary to the internal memory. Only if there's not enough capacity left the memory card will be used. However it still doesn't get one large single memory so the card needs to be large enough to hold the complete file you'd like to install.

I'm really interested in this. I have had a Start 20 for 6 months now and  have had only one update and that was before mid January this year. The way I read the above there has been one quite recently????

    Any advice welcome.

    Thanks

Yes, I was notified in Windows of an upgrade for my TomTom Start 20, so I connected it and allowed it to do its stuff. It all worked this time without a problem. I took the TomTom for a test drive (normally I don't bother with it unless I actually drive outside my area), but nothing had changed. Even the local speed limit revisions, completed almost a year ago, are still not recognised. If anyone asks me whether I'd recommend TomTom, I'd say, no. Get a Garmin.

    Hi,

to check which application version is installed on your device please enter your device's preferences menu and flip through the pages. Probably on the last page there'll be an option called something about my device. Access that option and you'll find all information like your device's name, the installed map and the installed Navcore application. It should be 11.030 or 11.031.

The later application updates seemed to be installed automatically without the possibility to deselect updating. So please check the application version.

@LittleTyke: You'll only get speed limits corrected by either correcting them directly on your device or by updating to a new map. You won't get any map improvements if only updating the application.

    Regards

    Lars.

But I still haven't been offered any map upgrade apart from the first free one! And these speed limit changes, including a speed camera from 40 mph down to 30 mph, have been in place for almost a year. I've already told TomTom about them, months ago.

    Hi LittleTyke,

you've got to purchase a map update subscription to receive map updates or you'll have to buy a single map which would as well give you the latest map.

"you've got to purchase a map update subscription to receive map updates..."

Doesn't the online upgrade tool (MyTomTom) advise when a new map is available then? That's what I've been expecting.

    Hi,

the MyTomTom software only tells you that there is a new map available if you don't have it already installed on your device and if you've got a valid map update subscription. Otherwise your device will start asking for a map update to be purchased after the map is about 1 year old so if it is map version v865 or v870 at the moment.

The latest map version is v885. New map releases usually get announced in this forum so you'll know if a new map has been released. Also you can roughly go by the date. The maps usually get released around mid of the months February, May, August and November.

Without a valid map update subscription you won't get notified in any other way of available map updates.

    Regards

    Lars.

I see from the Map Update Service for which you provided the hyperlink (thanks) that my price for an annual subscription is £26.97 (four updates).

Do you know whether the latest map will fit in my Start 20 UK and Eire? I have read about the maps getting larger and possibly not fitting into available memory and then there being the option of Map Zones. However, when I visit the page about Map Zones, there's the plaintive reminder: "NOTE: Map Zones are not yet supported by MyTomTom..."

If they're not supported, but my latest map won't fit, what then?
