Hi, after updating last week cannot navigate to home (greyed out) and trying to put an address in via postcode results in a file access error. I've tried this http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/8324/~/file-access-error-when-saving-settings-to-device with no luck. I'm going away tomorrow so need it!

Thank you

No there are postcodes, but very few, no WN2's for example.

Ive not had to use it for a while so I have restored from the last back up, scanned and fixed the initial problem and am now back at the file access error issue.

    Try this:

    1. Save everything from the device, using Explorer (or Finder on Mac), include all the files (hidden as well). It is also known as a manual backup: http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13354/

    2. Then format the internal storage (or memory card, depending which one you use) of your device. Use the COMPLETE format, not the quick. http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/12412/

    3. Go to TT HOME, Manage my "DEVICE", delete everything from the hard drive and try the update again. At this point you might have to disconnect the device a few times and switch it ON/OFF to enable it to setup some important stuff.

    4. Copy your voices and post codes back to the device (also the maps if that didn't download either).

    Other tips:

    - Try to disable your antivirus and firewall
    - Make sure you have the latest .NET cpmponents, Adobe Flash Player and Java installed.
    - Make sure you have all the latest updates and hotfixes/patches to your OS.
    - In case the device looks like hung during the update or the counter stopped, just leave it. It will be fine in a few minutes.
    - Try to uninstall and re-install the TomTom HOME application
    - Try to use a USB port on the mainboard, rather than a USB hub (desktop PC)

    - Any further issue: Try it on another PC, try it with different USB lead...the shorter the better (below steps are Windows specific)
    - Remove the TomTom HOME application and run CCLEANER (will remove your history, cookies, etc by default)

And do a fresh install of the post codes:

Try to run a low level format on the device. There are many free tools, just Google it.

I managed to get the format done by changing one of the settings to restore device defaults and then restored from the back up. Still got the postcode error but at least its working again after a fashion!

    Hi sharindlar,

It sounds like you have some corrupt information on your device. Or possibly the memory is fault like Zsolt suspected.

In this kind of situations it's paramount that you don't return any backups on your device as they might be corrupt as well. Since you have a valid map download on you account you should re-download the map and everything else.

    - Format your device as Zsolt instructed, but without making or returning any backups

    - Rename the Tomtom folder in your Documents folder

    - Restart TomTom HOME (note, it has to be completely restarted)

    - First update only TomTom Application until it's no longer offered (HOME will restart your device in between updates)

    - Then choose only the map to be installed

    - After this you can choose all the remaining updates

I hope this helps. Please, let me know if it doesn't.

    Cheers, Mikko

I have just updated my map and guess what? My Postcodes have all disappeared and I get a "File Error" message.

The good news is, I have found a cure. The only problem is when I went back to repeat the procedure so I could write it down some things had changed because I had fixed the problem. It is a pretty obvious procedure to do as what you are doing is basically rewriting the "zipcode" file from the one on the computer to the TomTom. The procedure as I remember it is below. I have tried to assume nothing so its a bit tedious in places.

    OK here we go:

With the computer on and the device (TomTom) switched off connect it to you computer's USB port then switch the device on. TomTom Home will automatically scan the device for updates, if there are any then accept the updates and let them load.

If there are no updates click "Back" then on the next screen click "Manage My XL" (it's on the second page).

This gives a list of Installed items on the device if Postcodes" is not listed this is a good sign.

Select the tab "Installed on Computer". You should now see three Postcodes files listed, if you click on "more Info" you will see they are all slightly different in the "zipcode" part of the filename. The earliest just says "zipcode", the next release says "zipcode-1" and the latest says "zipcode-2", this is the one we want and it should be version 905. Click "Select Item" and it will take you to a screen where your file will be highlighted.

On this screen click on "Copy Items" to copy the file from the computer onto your TomTom.

When finished close TomTom Home turn off your TomTom device and disconnect it.

Switch the TomTom device back on again and your Postcodes should work again.

    Simple!

Bear in mind what I said at the beginning I couldn't replicate what I did exactly but the above is a very close approximation.

Like everyone else I don't work for TomTom I am just a humble user who got lucky.

Let's hope my luck rubs off.
