how to get the red flashing cross off my device

Marked as answer: NC on 6 April 2011, 06:25

Connect your device to computer.  In the root directory of TomTom, find a file named ttsystem.  Rename it.

Reset your device and connect it to computer and run TomTom HOME.

TomTom HOME would offer you to download the navigation software.

You probably need to restart your device and connect it to TomTom HOME several times until you get the latest version for your device.

    Some more information about your device and the actions that produce the flahing 'X', would be useful.

    Hi - my home screen on my GO 930 now has the SD card flying out with a red cross through it. Weird because I have never used an SD card, eveything is on the internal memory. When I dock it to my computer, it does not recognise the device. I have tried on different PC also. Help :s

    @holliemike

    Well, if your computer does not recognize your internal memory after a TomTom RESET.  Maybe it is time to use a SD.

    Get a 4GB or larger SDHC card whichever is cheaper.  Restore your TomTom backup to the SDHC card.  Turn on your GO930.  There you go again!

    Hi,

         I have TT ONE 3rdEdition. Recently on the road, the device showed the dreaded flashing red cross and the device would not boot up. After going through the support pages, I had to reformat the device. However after that when I tried to install the application, it would install but when restarting the device I got the error message saying invalid attribute in XML. After many tries, (reformat/install), it said, could not read the .bif file. Now even though the unit has the app and map, it would not boot. I get the flashing red cross. I have ended up with a useless brick. Any help/pointers to salvage he unit?

    Thanks,

    Ram Sundar

    @ramsundar

    Just a reminder.  You have to format it to FAT32 and do not use Quick Format.

    Then let TTH install the available software package(s) for you.

    Safely disconnect from TTH and restart your ONE 3rd.

    Connect it back to TTH until there is no newer software update available.

    Then copy your Map folder(s) to your ONE from backup.

    Thanks for the response. I have followed your advice and now I am resigned to the fact that I may have a bad hardware(disk). Here is what I did.

    1. Reformat the device(no quick format).

    2. update my device.

    After this, the device could not reboot and still had the red flashing cross. I powered off and powered up. Now when I look at the device properties(from windows explorer), it says it has only abt 450MB  available, even though the application is itself 10.4 MB. Also when I tried to delete all the files or rename them, some of them I could not delete. They donot have any read only attribute.

    Bottom line, I have ended up with a brick. Calling to support was no help either. The answer I got was tough luck. Buy a new one. Not happy about that solution and answer from support.

    Does this apply to all TomToms? I have a One XL. Should I follow the same instructions?

    Yes it applies to your unit..... Just be sure to create a backup first. Here is a procedure to make a backup.

    I have a tom tom one XL and have a Europe map on a SD card that I purchased from tom tom a while back and when I travel to Europe I have been using it with no problem until this past month when I turned the GPS on in Europe the only thing I got was a flying card with a X so I could not use it.

    When I plug the unit in to the home computer with the card in it and click on use the devise the Europe map seems to work fine but when not connected It does not, Whats wrong what do I need to do.

    The US map in the unit hard drive works fine.

    With the older model gps's, when you plug the gps into your pc, the pc sees the gps as a USB flash memory drive. Use windows explorer, click on the drive  view the root dir.  It should look something like this.

    I'm also getting the flashing cross when I turn on my tomtom xl live, but it's not recognised by tomtom home when I connect it to my mac (running OSX 10.9.4). I've already reinstalled tomtom home. Feels like a bit of a catch 22 - any idea what else I can try?

    Thanks, but not really - the answer to the flashing cross is to connect to tt home to reload the software but I can't find any way to get tt home to recognise it.
