Just as the title says, whenever I plug my Tom-Tom device into the computer via USB port, it doesn't recognize it. It'll charge its battery, but nothing more. Help?

Were you able to connect to you gps in the past. ( You did not mention if this was a new gps you are trying to get connected.)

Also what model gps do you have?

What software are you using "myTomTom" or "TomTom Home"?

What operating system are you using?

To verify which device you are using go to the following website:

    http://uk.support.tomtom.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/9508/kw/which%20device%20do%20i%20have

Enter the first two characters of the serial number in the text box and press enter, or click on the 'find' button. The name of your device will be shown.

When the device model is: Go 100X Series, Go 200X, Via Series, Sony XNV Module then you need the myTomTom Support Application:

    http://www.tomtom.com/getstarted

Otherwise you need the TomTom Home Support Application:

    http://www.tomtom.com/services/service.php?id=16&tab=87

    I am using this version of Tom-Tom: ONE (30 Series) / 125 / 130 - 1GB TTS*

I have had this GPS for almost 2 years, but this is the first time I tried to connect it to the PC. I run it on Windows 7.

And I did download the TomTom Home Support Application. It keeps saying that there is no device connected.

Reset the unit. Hold the power button about 10 seconds till you hear the drum sounds. I don't think that model has a dedicated reset hole on the bottom.

Then connect again to the computer and see if Home recognizes it.

You could also try running Home in XP emulation.

With windows explorer go to the folder "program files", then into the "Tom Tom HOME 2" folder. Then right click the Tom Tom HOME application file nameed TomTomHOME.exe. Choose properties, then click the compatibility tab and choose to run this program in compatibility mode for widows xp service pack 3.

I have fully charged my device, but my computer just does not recognize it. At least I hope my device is fully charged. How can I be sure when it is?

You really can't --- Just charge it for a few hours that will be adequate

Do you have access to an old xp system, like an old laptop?

Windows 7 seems to be problematic with some people, and there does not appear to be one fix to solve all problems.

    1. Try uninstalling the Home software and then turn off your antivirus before reinstalling Home. Of course turn the antivirus back on after reinstalling Home.

Also if you have multiply usb ports try a different port. Do not use USB ports that are on a monitor, keyboard or hub if you have them there, just the ones on the cpu.

With the gps attached to the pc, go into windows device manager. Expand the "disk drives" is there a drive with the name TomTom with a yellow question mark next to it?

I bought a new Start 25 yesterday and downloaded the latest map via my tomtom.  Today 'my tomtom' won't recognise the device either.  Checked, fully charged bettery, tried different usb slot, tried a different web connector port (this is fine), done power button reset (15-20secs).  Looked in device manager, tomtom is not listed in the disk drives when connected and switched on? Using windows xp professional, fully updated....  Any ideas?

Sussed my connection problems by using the tomtom supplied usb cable, I was using my phone one before!  Must be wired differently or something... I tried everything else I could think of too, see my other reply if you haven't already... Are you using the supplied usb cable?? Hope this helps... Regards.

Anodos makes a good point, If you have another usb cable give it a try,  If the driver didn't install properly or couldn't be found you normally would see that a device was plugged in but windows would not know what to do with it and would display a yellow question mark in the device manager listing.

But nothing is reading or coming up in the device manager when I plug it in. There is no Yellow Question Mark at all. I can try and look for another USB cable cord though.

Yep, trying a different cable is a good idea because it soulds like the pc doesn't detect anything being plugged in. If the pc saw a usb device plug in to it, it will give you some kind of acknowledgement that something other then air was plugged in.

The cables are cheap and you can usually find them a office supply stores, walmart (I think) and most places that sell computers. Just take your cable with you so you can make sure you get  a cable with the right plug ends on it.

i have tried 2 usb cables which has the correct form factor in at least 2 ports.

"My computer" and device manager does not see the USB device.

I looked up Ebay and it seems the usb cable used is just a standard usb cable ... does not seem to be a special data cable.

At this point, I am guessing it is because I use Windows 7. Did anybody use it successfully w Win 7?

Or should I drop by Fry's (the local electronics store) and try and get TomTom's version of the USB cable?

    Thanks!

I have had aTomTom XL S IQ Routes Edition for the last two years and it has bee working fine. I have just tried to update the maps but this time, my laptop mac will not recognize the device. I have tried everything: resetting the device, connecting to different ports, erasing everything and downloading again TomTom Home,....By the way, I do have the original USB cable.

I am desperate, I have bought the maps update to no use....

    Please, HELP!!!!

Try a drum reset on the unit by holding the power button about 20 seconds till you hear the drum sounds unless your model has a dedicated reset hole
