I have a TOMTOM 730 with the above map version 805.1801.

Home cannot see this map for updates and consequently there does not appear to be anywayt to update.

Where am I going wrong?

This may sound convoluted but .................

Recent maps have become too large for the standard 2GB memory size of models, including yours.

    So.............

If you copy absolutely everything from internal, the map, all other folders, ALL loose files, everything, to a 4gb SDHC card or larger (8gb??) and the faster the better (class 6+).

    And then.................

Place the sdhc card in a card reader, NOT the unit.

Start Home and Home should 'see' the card in the card reader as your TomTom unit and should offer the complete Europe map (which is over 2GB in size).

If so, you should be able to purchase it, install to the shdc card and THEN, once installed, insert the sdhc card in your unit and you should be good to go. (The unit will boot off the sdhc card since it sees the loose files, meaning the application, installed there).
