I received this error message in TomTom Home. Yesterday, I spent an hour on the phone with a support person who gave me instructions on how to download the Western & Central Europe map (more than 2 GB) to my XL 340M device. After following her instructions for backing up and then deleting my North America maps and any other non-essential files to make room for this monster sized file, and after 13 hours of downloading, I got the above message for "Step 4 Install to Hard disk." The complete error message say, "There is not enough free space on your device to add the item. You need to remove: 504.1 Mb." Of course, today is Sunday and there is no support available until tomorrow. I need to get far enough along in this process to backup the Europe map to my computer's hard drive without having to have to lose the 13 hours of downloaded information. Has anyone else encountered this situation and found a way to resolve it without deleting essential files?

Your Western_and_Central_Europe is already on your computer. You'll find it in compressed form here:

    C:Documents and SettingsyournameMy DocumentsTomTomHOMEDownloadscompletemaps

    BUT

If indeed that's the map downloaded, there is NO way it will ever install on that unit. It's greater than 2 gigs and that unit doesn't have a sdhc slot to handle that and internal is only 2 gigs in total.

You should never have gotten that map but, rather, gotten a zoned map which just includes some European countries in each zone.

Are you sure the map you got was NOT Europe_West? That would be a zoned map and should fit on your unit.

I am having a very similar problem - device registers 'no maps found' TomTom HOME says 'insufficient space on device, etc - and so I followed the path you set out. All that is in my 'maps' folder is 'fuel prices, Europe'. In the meantime I can neither use my XL IQ Routes, nor fix it. Any further suggestions?

    Rocklover,

i don't know if I am in time to help you, but I got my TomTom to work.  You say that you do not want nay other country's maps which confuses me as to what is the problem.  Just what is it that you are trying to do?

I do not believe that their is a solution to this problem.  Most of the Tom Tom's have limited memory and since the updated maps are generally going to be larger we are all screwed!  My very first Tom Tom had a memory card but then they all went to hard drives which I believe was a major mistake since it dosen't leave room for memory growth.

i share the same problems. Not enough space to download the central europe maps, no way to free more after removing voices in several languages and when I open my tomtom, it says there are no maps and I can go no further as in finding a menu to make a hard reset. I've spent hours on this and it's no consolation to see others have too without finding a solution. Do I buy another gps system and toss this one? No, barely used but useless!

I can neither go forward nor backward literally!

You should be able to reformat the Tom tom if all else fails , because it will be empty, log back in to account and start again , hope it helps.

Does this mean we can not update our maps?   If that's true, then this is such a scam.  This device we bought said it would be compatible with our cell  phones, too, but THAT didn't happen!  We are going on vacation and need a new route to get to our destination.  No updates?  Why do we have this thing then?   Shame on Tom Tom!   :smileymad:

Is there a way to reformat the device?  I could do that, and start fresh with updated maps.  I, too, don't want foreign languages on my device, just basic maps to help us get to our destination, while pulling a camper.

I see you have a device with "Lifetime Maps"

Have you registered that? If not contact customer support, as you are supposed to have done that within 90 days of purchase. They should also sort out why you are not receiving updates.

I have registered as I am supposed to do.  I've already received some updates, but now my device is saying there is not enough space to update any longer.  I just would like to know how to delete what I do not need.

     Thanks.

It shouldn't be full that quick. Unfortunately you can't remove content just like that. Do you have a microSD slot on the device? If yes, just put an 8GB memory card in.

How can I create more free space on my device? (TomTom HOME) --To delete files, click Manage my device in TomTom HOME and then select the Items on device tab--When you delete items from your device HOME recommends to save a copy on your computer.

If you delete maps, make sure you have a backup otherwise you will not be able to install the map again. You can use TomTom HOME to make a backup.

Installing the latest map failed at the "Install to Memory Card" stage, with the message "There is not enough free space on your device to add the item. You need to remove 274Kb".

Can I do this? If not, is my device redundant?

Delete all the files in the license folder (use Explorer). You can dump car files in the art/cars folder. Remove all voices but one.

That should free up 274 kb.

It will largely depend on the type of computer software youre using.  The instructions provided is for Windows 8 and Mac.  Not sure what computer software youre using.

The easiest way to make a backup of all the contents of your TomTom device is by using TomTom HOME. You can make one backup per device and store it on your computer. When you make a new backup, the old backup for that device is overwritten.
Tip: We recommend setting HOME to back up automatically before installing new content. [ more... ] 1. Connect your navigation device to your computer and switch it on.
TomTom HOME starts automatically. If TomTom HOME does not start, do one of the following:
Windows 8: Right-click on the Start screen and click All apps. Then scroll through the list of applications until you see TomTom HOME. Double click to open the program.
Older versions of Windows: Click Start > All Programs > TomTom > TomTom HOME.
Mac: Click Go in the Finder menu and choose Applications, then double-click TomTom HOME.
    2. Click Back up and restore in the HOME menu.

    Backup and restore
    3. Click Back up my device and then click Back up now in the bottom right corner. HOME backs up your device.
    4. Wait until HOME has finished creating the backup. Then click Done.
To see where HOME saves your backups do one of the following: Windows: Click Tools > TomTom HOME Preferences and then select the Folder Preferences tab.
Mac: Click TomTom HOME > Preferences... and then select the Folder Preferences tab.
To restore a backup, click Back up and restore in the HOME menu and then click Restore my device. Backup your navigation device manually In exceptional cases you may need to backup your navigation device manually.

XL on a W7Pro (64B) OK deleted the license files, and the car art...still says I need 34.7Mb to install map files (and I have been getting the "you need to update" GPS quick fix email for a while (like 6 months). Any other clues?

    Thanks in advance

Sadly, you may need to remove a computer voice to free up enough space.
