On June 6 I was advised that there were map updates for my TomTom (TomTom One - 130).  Two weeks later I got around to following the email's download instructions.  After trying to update my unit I was informed that it did not have enough memory.  Making matters worse, in the process of trying to install the map updates my existing maps were erased.  After several more unsuccessful attempts I contacted the TomTom support team by phone.  After that I spent close to 5 hours in two different sessions with two different support team staff,  I still don't have the problem resolved and my TomTom still announces  No Maps Found!

This morning I received an email from the TomTom support people telling me "unfortunately that was the last step to solve the issue, there is no further troubleshooting and we cannot fix the issue, the GPs is no longer under warranty and we cannot replace it, we are really sorry about this inconvenience."  GREAT - I've lost the use of my unit; I've lost the voice that I paid extra for and I've lost the recent maps that I purchased.  To the best of my knowledge I was never warned that TomTom's map update might render my TomTom unusable.

If the map WAS downloaded, you should find it here:

    c:documents and settingsyournamemy documentsTomTomHomeDownloadsCompleteMaps

and you can try to install it manually without using Home. See here:

    http://www.tomtomforums.com/t18197-how-install-downloaded-map-without-using-home.html

    See if that works.

This same thing happened to me!

TomTom sent a reminder that updates were available.

I was going out of the country & wanted to make sure I had the latest maps.

I did the update & lost everything!!!

TomTom my hats off to you, what a way to up your sales!!!

I am a Realtor & will tell everyone I every meet about this scam...

If it's not a scam, then TomTom should replace the item they broke, at no cost to the consumer they just took advantage of!!!

When you say everything, what do you mean? And please don't say everything but specify it.

If that other person's experience, following a map update, was similar to mine, when s/he says s/he lost "everything" I imagine that his/her TomTom was rendered unusable ... no maps at all, no GPS directions nor feedback, nothing ... the unit basically stopped working because its entire data base was lost.

Very frustrating to put it mildly!!

You only need to restore one file: mapsettings.cfg

I lost all my maps when trying to update. When I tried to restore from my backup it said the format wasn't compatible and I needed to change the format of the tomtom .. So I tried reformatting it to the suggested format, this brought up a format failed message and now all I get is a nasty Red X on my startup screen :-(. Help!

I tried reinstalling tomtom home, but I'm still getting the message that I need to reformat..and when I try the reformat fails. It also fails to recognize that the tomtom is connected to the computer when it is. I have backup files, but got the message that they were the wrong format ..that's why I tried to reformat . That action seems to have completely finished off my tomtom. The problems get worse with everything I try :-(

    Dear briangibb

Exactly the same thing happened to me..

Just about at the end of my tether with my XL IQ routes.... It would appear everything has been wiped by the installation of a Speed cam for UK freebie.... Further the initial backup facility appears to have failed as Ive located the Folder with a view to a Direct Install.. And guess what.. Its empty... I only use the **bleep** thing once in a blue moon and there appears to be no way to retrieve the situation.. And I certainly dont have £60 to risk on a DL of a new map that may or may not install.

    Yours

    FED UP!

Have you tried with a different USB cable (both)?

Thanks for taking the time and trouble to Reply.

    Appreciated.

Basically I'm an Old Fart - And  I fail to see the diffference between a USB Port at the back of my Computer as opposed to the front being more advantagious.. But apparently People swear by it.

I am just tired of 'Planned  Sharp Practice 'obsolesence' > requiring constant upgrades.

I findi it deeply disappointing that they disable by default a Product you have previously bought. Without Permission.

'Theft' is a word that comes to mind.....I bought this Application in the Past and now I am unable to access my inital purchase through apparently minor Free Upgrades  - Speed Cams in Slovakia - Which have no relevance.

Anyway Best Wishes - Have a Good Christmas!

    Mark.

They don't disable anything. USB ports on the front tend to be 1.1 sometimes, instead of 2.0.

However I mentioned cable, not port. Maybe the cable is faulty.

Thank you so much! I tried a different USB cable. And was able to re-format the drive and download the maps again from my TomTom Home account. Everything seems ok, although I've yet to try it on a journey. I really thought there was no hope of restoring it!
