When I got my device I purchased, downloaded (took 8 hours), and installed the Western Europe map.

Now every time I connect my tomtom via, it starts to download the US/NA map. I don't need it.

I've cleared my internet cache, the MyTomTom cache, uninstalled & reinstalled MyTomTom, and it keeps down loading.

Is there any way to stop this? Or am I just going to have to suffer through a 7+ hour download of the map and then another 7+ hour download of the western Europe map?

You'll need to call CS at 866-486-6866 and ask for a supervisor or 2nd level support to kill the job on your account. I doubt the 1st level knows how to do it.

When you get to 'Get New Items' screen, can't you uncheck the map you don't want?

    No it's just continously downloading.

That screen only shows the Western Europe map (the one currently installed on my device) available for download. If I check that and try to download it, I get the "Please wait until your download has finished" message.

Maybe it's something to do with the lifetime map update service? I have that for the USA/Canada/Mexico map....which is the one downloading.

Why can't TomTom just put  cancel button in. I accidentally checked the europe map as well as the Australia map i want and now have to download 3GB of unwanted data via my internet connection. Is TomTom going to pay for the extra data that they're making me use????

Agreed, a button to stop would be really useful for the customer.  No good having it just at head office.

I have linked up my phone to my pc to do a update on a application only whilst I'm out on the road, I let it do all update which I now realise includes a map when I wont be able to update the map due to time and data restrictions.  A lack of a cancel button means I cant even do the software update until the que clears.   Raaaaaaaa!

I am also extremely frustrated with the lack of control that one has over these devices. (Mine is GO 6000 with "lifetime" maps.) I live in Europe and travel frequently in North America, so I need access to both maps. The device doesn't have enough memory for even one of them, so I decided to buy two external SD memories and put one map on each. Now I discover that when I switch the memory card, the device does not recognize the new card and wants to format it. It will not give me the opportunity to use the "switch maps" option, which I have seen on the menu, but which is not accessible when I need it. So it appears that every time I travel, I need to reformat the external memory card and go through the interminable process of waiting while the excruciatingly slow tomtom server downloads the map I need. It should be trivial for the "My Drive Connect" software to permit viewing the device's directories and changing the map software. I certainly don't have time to mess around with such an inflexible device. The software permits no interaction at all. It seems the tomtom programmers think that all users are so stupid they can't manage the simplest of tasks. In fact, I can't even find a way to terminate a "my drive connect" session short of killing it with the Windows task manager. Fighting with this brain dead device is infuriating.

Why two sd cards? One map should fit on internal and the other on a microsdhc card (Sandisk 16 gb is a good choice). Do you not have Europe on internal storage and the North America map on a card. MyDriveConnect installs a map where it sees space, internal or the sd card. Are you saying you have NO maps on internal? Support for further assistance:

I put the original Europe map on the internal memory, but as you no doubt have seen from the fora, this is not adequate to store the newer, larger maps. SD cards are cheap and if I can avoid time-wasting downloads, the cost is well worth it. My problem is the inability of the device to (a) recognize the SD card with the alternate map on it and (b) the lack of accessibility for me to tell the device the location of the map that I need.

How did you manage to get the map on the card in the first place?

I knew the internal memory would not hold both maps, so I bought an SD card and the device formatted it. Then, when I originally downloaded the North America map, the device put it on the SD card. Since then, it seems to have forgotten about this. Today, when I installed the SD card with the NA map on it, the device wanted to reformat the SD card. Finally, I gave up and allowed the reformat, then waited while it downloaded the NA map again and saved it on the card. Now it works. This is neither user friendly nor intelligent software. Also, does anyone know how to terminate a "my drive connect" session without killing it with windows task manager?

You mean stopping a download while in progress? That can only be done by contacting Support. You can shot down MyDriveConnect while it is doing something by clicking in the desktop icon and select 'exit'. But the next time you start MyDriveConnect, the download proceeds without Support intervention.

I meant stopping a download while it is in progress. Most of the time, there is no icon permitting an interrupt or termination of the ongoing process. In any case, I will work with the software as it is. My comments, however, stand.

I agree with all the sentiments here. I have never come across a more frustrating device.
The battery wouldn't hold a charge since new but I never worried as it was in the car. Just today
I thought to try to see if there were any new updates and there were 4. When pressing update
all I saw that it was a 4 hr job! As I pay per MB here in South Africa there is no way that I want a
huge map of all of Africa. It says " this download may take some time " Yes! It will but there is no
way to stop it! Frankly I have never believed that this device was a patch on my Garmin. This
device has had little use but is now destined for the bin. Then I'll uninstall the MyDrive software and hopefully that will ease my frustration. I agree with jjs above that this software is useless and permits little
interaction. Checking further it appears that you wont have much luck not the numbers given above either https://www.gps-data-team.com/pda-gps-navigation/topic/726.html

    Hi
    Welcome to the site.....
If you haven't reconnected the device since your post the Tomtom server should have timed out by now with an error, usually around 2 to 3 hours

If/When you decide reconnect your device, if you chose the "My Content button"
Then instead of installing everything in one pass you can Tick or Un-tick the updates you wish to install
The GPS QuickFIX is forced ticked by Tomtom, so no choice with that but its only a very small file
