With the new GO Wi-Fi®️ devices updates can now be downloaded and installed without a computer. The video below gets you started with this:

Please note, that when you connect your device to a Wi-Fi®️ network all Bluetooth®️ connections will be overridden to save power. Once you're out or Wi-Fi®️ range your device will automatically resume the Bluetooth®️ connections.

If you don't have a Wi-Fi®️ connection available you can also update your device by connecting it to your computer with a USB cable to use your computer's internet connection. Please, make sure you have the MyDrive Connect software installed and running on your computer.

For more information, please see this FAQ [support FAQ - Updating your device using Wi-Fi®️]

Just one problem here, "Select Wifi connection from list" most people I know turn off WIFI ID's (Name of wifi) so that nobody can scan and find by accident, or deliberate.

WiFI ID:Turned off

Therefore I hope there is a "Add Wifi" to be able to enter the WIFI name and not see your home wifi listed because its name is switched off

Hi John,

Thanks for bringing this up!

Other connection methods are available in the Advanced settings menu where you can connect e.g. with the SSID. For more information, please see here [user manual].

And as with the last update my GO520 downloads a small section then "looses wi-fi connection" despite moving precisely NOWHERE AND BEING SAT NEXT TO THE ROUTER. THIS DEVICE AND ITS UPDATE PROCESS ARE UTTER RUBBISH. DOES NO-ONE AT TOMTOM KNOW HOW TO TEST ANYTHING ???? Shall I send you a bill for doing your testing for you ?????

Is MyDriveConnect open and running? It should not be.
Userlevel 2
Surely irrelevant - My Drive connect is a Bluetooth connection and the man from TomTom states :

Please note, that when you connect your device to a Wi-Fi®️ network all Bluetooth®️ connections will be overridden to save power.

Exactly this.

Yesterday I downloaded a 7GB software update over wifi and the unit was sat next to the router. SIX TIMES it lost wifi connection. I had to restart the unit every time for it to resume. Not only that but it took nearly two hours on a 50MB connection.

Really TomTom? Really?
Tomtom dont have a clue when it comes to programming, yer the hardware is good, but its programs stink

Just to clear some things up: MyDrive is a phone app, that connects via BT, also a web site to the TT cloud, to do online route planning. MyDrive Connect is the software that allows a PC to tether Internet connection to the device, if you don't want to use Wi-Fi.

Having said that, I have a GO 520 and a GO 5200 too in the family and none of those ever disconnected from Wi-Fi, even when downloading 6.5GB maps. I suppose the device is connected at all times to some sort of power source, so unless somehow that switches off, it should keep the connection. Another issue can be if you use multiple routers with the same SSID. I have that issue at my brother, that he's got 2 routers, both covering his PC and it is keep switching between the two. Also it is worth checking in the router's settings if there is any sort of feature enabled that can interfere with.

A 50Mbps connection is 6.25MB/sec, so in case you can fully utilize that speed at all times whilst downloading, it really shouldn't take any longer than around 20 minutes. I have a 15Mbps connection with a 150Mbps Wi-Fi router and it takes me around 1 hour to download the full EU map. When the kids are using their devices at the same time, then it goes up to max 2 hours.

Hi all,

If you're Wi-Fi®️ connection is dropping, I'd recommend to forget the connection and re-connect to it. Also check if you're router is automatically toggling between a 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz connection. Our devices only support 2.4 GHz.

Please, also remember that you can always connect your device to your computer to share the computer's internet connection. Please, make sure MyDrive Connect is installed and running on the computer.

Cheers, Mikko
Yes, you would think that a new device would have the latest wifi 5g

Hi John,

All Wi-Fi®️ modems and routers support the 2.4 GHz connection and most, but not all, also the 5 GHz frequency. As the higher frequency would bring little benefits for our customers it was decided not to support it on these devices.

Hi, I just bought TomTom 5200 model. I live in England and use a Router supplied by SSE called Technicolor. I have managed to connect to our home Router using 2.4 Ghz but the 5200 SatNav keeps drops the setting. After rebooting the device it picks up the Router again but very quickly the connection to the home Router is lost. My Apple iPhone & MacBook Air are connected to the Router without any problems. Can someone please advise why the wireless connection is so unstable? Many Thanks.
mikkok i would suggest you go lookup the benefits of 5g in a world full of 2.4g transmitters.

Sorry behnam-tahzib so many things that can go wrong, dont know what modem sse provides you, sometimes you need to switch them to modem mode, and install your own wifi router. Have you tried moving closer to your router? Can you use the usb to a laptop or pc instead?

I use the virgin media superhub, very powerful on 2.4 and 5g at thecsame time, but lack of features means i may have to buy my own netgear wifi router.

Perhaps speak to scotish electric, see if the can provide a new device? Tell tomtom by message , it could even be the tomtom at fault.

Thanks for your help. At the end, I found the wifi connection very unreliable. I now just do it via my computer.
Many Thanks.

I've just bought a GO 6200. WiFi is set and connected. But the device says it's up to date. While it still has software version 16.402 and card version 975.

Is it possible to make GO 6200 force update? I have a very long trip in a week, and I need the latest maps as many portions of the route were under heavy construction a year ago.
Userlevel 7
Well, the latest map is 985 and application is 17.1.

Are there any updates showings when you go to the menu-->Settings for the device?

When I go to "Settings" > "Updates & New Items", I see just a device smile and a message: "Your TomTom GO 6200 is up to date!" Also when I go to "Settings" > "Maps", the device shows "Current Map": Europe. However, when I go to "Add a map" or "Delete maps", there are no options available.

Right after the purchase and setting WiFi the device showed 2 updates available using badge "2" on "Updates & New Items" icon. I assume they were software update and map update. When I tried to go into "Updates & New Items", the device told me, WiFi is not reachable. And actually the device stopped to work with my home WiFi, however, all my other devices were using it just fine, and the device was able to see neighbour WiFi networks. Then I turned the device off, and after restart it starts to work with WiFi (connected), but doesn't show any available updates anymore. Reset of the device doesn't help.

Hi eshustrov,

Welcome to the Community!

Unfortunately, we're currently having a technical issue due to which some GO Wi-Fi ®️ users are not getting updates offered. This can be solved by our technicians pushing the v17.1 update to the affected device. This has now been done for you and you can update your device again :d

Please, reset your device by pressing and holding down the power button until you hear a drumming sound (ca 15 sec). After your device restarts and connects to Wi-Fi ®️ it will install the software update.

We're very sorry for the inconvenience this has caused you!

Cheers, Mikko
Hi Mikko,

Thank you for solving my issue in just one day!

I’ve restarted the device, and it has autimatically updated its software. And after another restart it has found map and speed camera updates! I have already updated them successfully!

Thank you so much for your help!

Kind regards,

Eduard
Hi Mikko,

I experienced serious problems updating my new TomTom Go 5200 using wifi, while with all my other devices (computers, smartphones, tablet) I do not have any difficulty using my wifi, even upstairs, and far out in the (not so large) garden.
When I returned my TTGO5200 to the shop, they tried it on their wifi, and it downloaded updates without a problem.
So at home I tried connecting the TTGO5200 to another energy source ( a powerbank), and tried downloading another map (Great Britain) and that was successful without a hitch! So if someone has trouble updating his TT using a "thuislader" (home charger), maybe that thuislader is the problem. I used an old TT thuislader, as the TTGO5200 is delivered without one ...

I am very glad wit my TTGO5200, just because of the wifi possibility for updating, as I don't use Windows computers, and TomTom doesn't support Linux.
Same issue here absolute rubbish wifi. Sitting 2 feet from my router and the best this machine can do is to download about 2% before losing my connection and having to boot to drum roll to find it again. If i dont reboot it will never find my wifi again and the neighbours wifi appear and disappear constantly (mine will never show up again).

At the price of this machine it should never be released without being properly tested and this bug isnt exactly hard to find, Come on Tomtom get a solution out.

My nw 6200 even connects when the car is in the garage, 2 floors below my router. It is a complete mystery just how variable are these devices.
