Question

GO 620 on the road

I'm considering the suggested (by TT), their GO620 since my GO730 is near EOL and after reading through the 142 page manual, I'm wondering if one needs to use their smartphone in conjunction with the GO, to use Live Traffic and Speed Cameras..etc..? I know Downloads are done via WiFi, but from what I've seen on some vids, it was mentioned that about 10G of data is used on average/month. Do I have to use my phone and data plan to use the GO620 on the road..?
And, if one downloads a 'foreign country' map, ie Italy or Denmark, what language is used for directions etc..?
Thanks for any feedback or directions..

Hi
@jatco
I'm in the UK the largest data download is the Full Europe Map around 7GB for my GO 520 Wifi
Normally they issue new maps every 3 months, Feb, May, Aug, Nov

I use a Nokia 625 Windows Phone for Live Traffic + Phone
I use to buy a Data Goody Bag for the Live Traffic... One month I forgot to renew, and the Data was billed to my Pay as you Go Account, the charge was so small I haven't bothered to renew my Data Goody Bag
But obviously If your a Professional Driver on the road every day, you would use more data

The Live Traffic system is different for the USA & Canada

Thanks for your reply YFM. I presume the same process is needed here in Canada and USA, that being the use of your phone (data) and the GO WiFI.
I'm not a 'professional' driver, but use my TT everyday during the week for work. I could use the Co. Iphone while working and not use up my data... but I was considering taking the gps to Europe on our upcoming holidays in September, so use my phone overseas, would/could run up the data bill considerably.., that's my concern...!
I'll look into what plan if any, my provider has for Out of Country..
Thanks for your feedback

Note that MyDrive also generates data traffic so that the amount of data usage can be increased.
Thanks again for more useful information.
My Drive would be used for route planning in advance correct.?
I would download Europe maps via Wi-Fi before leaving and use the phone+GPS to plan the nxt destination.... or route plan in advance from home, since we know what days we are planning to be where were going..!
Gotta check w/our providers.
Geeze this is getting complicated. Maybe I should consider a different model.#.. 6200..?
Thx again EthoZ

Hands off! These devices do not work in North America and are not normally sold there (and Australia).
Once again thanks.. ...
I'm going to have to buy you a beer soon..lol
Hello again EthoZ...
Been looking at other options for our No.American/Canada market for a unit that does Not require the use of your cel phone and your data usage to Navigate. Looking at the Via 1625M .. as a possibility during some searching...
Any info, feedback or suggestions would be helpful....
Thanks in advance...

It all depends on whether you want your device to be aware of traffic conditions, and plan your routes to avoid them where possible.

No TomTom requires use of your phone's data to search for addresses or points of interest (unless you tell it to), or to allow you navigate, as all map data and addressing information is stored locally on the device.

Phone data is only used for things like downloading current traffic conditions or roadworks, or for updating information you've added to MyDrive such as new places or destinations.

If these things aren't important to you, then you'll probably want to go for the cheaper 1625M.
My GO620 purchased in the USA can also get traffic via RDS (using the optional car charging cable with built in receiver), so I don't use the Bluetooth connection. I doubt that traffic cameras are shown though.

You're right, you can use the RDS charger, however be aware it's not the 'proper' TomTom traffic feed.

It's better than nothing though, and should highlight most major jams.
